Looks like a great trip. Makes me want to plan another....

Did you beat the thunderstorms home?

It was a wonderful trip....and yes, beat the thunderstorms home.

In total, we had 18 mins of light drizzle in 8.5 days.....

Really enjoyed that, I'd like to do something like that next year.
Did you just make up the route as you went and booked accommodation on the fly?
I'm asking as I haven't been abroad with my bike yet and not sure what's the best option.

We did. :thumb

Rock up at a hotel in the evening, have a chat about where we wanted to go the next day over dinner, then in the morning have a look at the map, decide how far we want to ride (depending on how much we drank the night before :D) and jump on booking.com

There were a handful of places to see (Grimsel Pass, Great St Bernard Pass, Stelvio Pass, Black Forest) , so having these did help shape a route....which in turn allowed us to choose a place to stay in the evening.

1 thing I like about booking.com, is that you can simply reserve online and pay @ the venue; the 1 small drawback (which probably exists on most hotel booking sites) is that booking on the day means zero refund/full payment if you don’t make it there.

Also, using 2 phones & an i pad was bloody useful, as we could shape a route on the i pad, browse hotels on 1 phone and browse online on the other phone

Good advice but don’t push the miles on your first trip and in the summer get an early start and early finish for best results.

Yep, that’s probably not ideal for an international newbie, but Bounce and I are professionals! :D
