Richie,

I was hoping someone might notice my post eventually :)

Glad you like the app, it's got even a few slight improvements that are not included in the iPhone app at this time.

Please feel free to mention it to people!

All the Best,

David

Interesting that Android seems to be disproportionately larger in the US when compared with iPhone, this is a very steep learning curve!

They are just all iSheep round here I am afraid and are too scared to sample the joys of Android. I will look it up on the market later on. Is it Google maps/navigate that your using? Would be good if you could hand the info over to copilot as well for the trips where 3G isnt available, or any universal format if there is such a thing.

Hi Mark,

Glad to hear that someone out there is using Android (I was starting to get a bit worried!), yes, the maps are from google, minimal integration with other systems at this time, just lots of cool routes to look at.

Do you have your android mounted on the bike for navigation then?

David

Yes I have my Desire mounted on the bike for navigation. Will probably go the droid route in the car as well once a few of the droid pads come out and I can see where they are heading. Currently use a car pc for all that stuff at the mo but Android is definitely the future.
Sorry I havent had time to load your app yet but it is on the todo list.

Mark,

Thanks for the additional info, interesting that you are using the Android on the bike, thanks for letting me know (I'd be interested to know how it's mounted on there if you have the time to post a photo at some point)

Thanks also for loading the app and adding a route, you are the first person in the UK to use the Android app to add a route (apart from my good self of course)

To anyone else reading this post, if you have a different Android device than the Desire I'd be interested to hear feedback about how it looks / feels (there are so many android devices that I have not been able to exhaustively test them all)

David - the offer is still open for a free trial of DeviceAnywhere, I can get you a few hours to test across a load of Android devices, we have something like 75 devices in our Android package.

The phone is mounted in nothing fancier than an OtterBox mounted on a home made bracket off the top screen brace and I stuck a switching regulator in it to take care of the charging. Co Pilot takes care of the GPS. It works ok but I have plans to make a better fitting box so it is neater plus I want the back of the box to be alloy. The only fault with how it is other than looks is on hot days and driving into the sun the phone gets a bit hot due to it being pretty well insulated in there. The alloy should act as a heat sink keeping things cooler.

Mark, sounds interesting.

I had some bad experience with devices vibrating or being shocked to an early grave, so I am a bit a reluctant to mount any of my test devices on the bike at this time. Probably this is more due to the lack of mounting skills by yours truly though!

Thanks

David

Purchased a copy for my HTC Magic (well for a couple of quid why wouldn't I). Not had much of a chance to play with it as yet; I can't get a decent GPS signal inside the house and I haven't been out and about since I got it.

Looking forward to having some fun with it though.

Hi Larne,

If you can't get a GPS signal, just hit, 'nearby location' and tap a location near to you, this will give the same nearby list of routes as when the GPS comes up.

This is a new feature that it is not yet included in the current iPhone version.

I hope you don't mind me being a smartarse but as you can imagine I've used the app quite a lot!

All the Best and thanks for buying the app.

David

there isn't anything special about my mount and it has done a good few thousand miles now with no harm done. To pad the OtterBox out to fit you use a fair bit of foam so maybe that is helping. It doesn't help with the heat though :-(

Purchased! Been waiting for this on Android for ages. Didn't realise it was someone of this parish. Now if Memory Map would just pull their finger out too and do the android version of their program.......

Hi David - when I tap on 'Near Location' all I get is a blank background (aside from a grid) with a reticule floating over it. No map. I had assumed this was due to the GPS not working but from your remark it sounds like I should be able to see a map. Any suggestions on what I should do to get this feature working?

Just noticed something else that is a bit odd. If I use google maps, copilot I get a GPS fix within seconds (satdish thing goes constant green) but with Biking roads it can take several minutes. Not all the time just sometimes. No idea why this would be as I assume you are taping into the location API which both Google and Copilot will use.. This is without moving and happens the same whether I use Google maps first or second

Hi there Chaps,

That might depend on the device and the way the GPS works (hence my original tip might not be entirely correct)

It might be indeed that the GPS needs to receive before the map is drawn, can I just check with you both that the map does display correctly once the GPS is up?

Sorry about the confusion

David
