Android Auto replaced by Google Assistant Driving mode

Apparently in June 2022, AA was replaced by Driving Mode in the Google Assistant. Who knew?

More here - have to use your phone in Portrait mode (why?), so a phone-holder is required to be legal.
Don't know if you can still use a secondary screen (doh! see my other thread).
Only works in a few countries.
Runs on Android 9.0 or higher (not 6.0 like AA).
When you navigate in Google Maps, Driving Assistant starts automatically.

Sadly its a problem i don't have.

What does it do?
is it just google maps instead of a proper built in Nav?

Its actually designed to reduce the ability for users to use their phones when driving, more so with touching the screen.
When using google maps it automatically stops notifications pinging (as well as social media accounts and emails) to reduce distractions etc but still allows the ability to integrate your music list etc to the car etc
Allows your messages to be spoken to you so you don't have to touch the screen and take your eyes off the road to read them it also allows you to dictate a message and tell Google to whom to send the message to etc
Everyone with a up to date Android phone has Android Auto (or just download the app) (or if you are an Apple junky you have Apple carplay)

Like most sensible drivers i don't use my phone while driving anyway, i tend to keep it in my pocket.
when i press "Media" on the car dash it plays the music off my phone, so no need to mess with the phone for that and the car has Sat Nav built in like most cars these days.
Ironically my car has Apple Carplay, which isn't any use to me as i have a Samsung phone.

I have noticed my phone knows when i am driving, and goes into auto mode.
Apps such as Alexa wont work once I'm moving, If i want to play music through Alexa i have to sort it out before driving off.
You can put the phone in the cradle and shout at it, but i find it doesn't hear me very well and i end up listening to some crap i don't like.
Neil Diamond becomes Taylor Swift.... the likeness is uncanny

Your car joins with the phone and the systems integrate so everything is done via your cars media centre (think spotify and google maps etc) so again no longer touching phone or having a small screen and everything can be navigated via the controls on the steering/media centre

Those standalone satnavs are utterly pointless now for the vast majority of drivers
Tesla is a very good example of how its truly integrated but most cars from the last couple of years now have full integration with modern smartphones
