Android vs iPhone

With my contract up in a couple of months and the desire for something new and shiny to sit in my pocket, I was looking forward to the launch of the iPhone 5 in summer or whenever.

However, having popped into Best Buy for a tumble dryer recently, I was easily tempted to browse their cunningly placed smartphone display inside the entrance to the store. Fell for it.

It seems that the iPhone has some serious competition now and it was the HTC and Samsung Galaxy handsets that really did look impressive. More of my mates seem to be popping up with HTCs recently too and they talk highly of them. But they would really as they don't want to look like muppets having tied themselves in for 18 months.

So, questions for those that have made the switch:
1. Are they as easy to live with as an iphone?
2. What's the battery life like?
3. How easy is it to get my itunes music onto an Android phone?
4. What's the battery life like of the most popular models?
5. What's the choice of apps like?
6. Customer service - Apple's is excellent (but not cheap out of warranty). How about others?
7. Does it feel as "cool" to use or does it erode one's masculinity and credibility?

I have just got the cheapo Wildfire. My son has an Iphone.

I chose the muppet HTC as

Drag and drop music and films no need for Itunes (argh)
One click install applications no need for Itunes (argh2)

All working with no problems I am delighted so far , about 4 days. Still getting the hang of it compared to my old builders Nokia...

Did I say that there is absolutely no need for ferking Itunes

1. Probably easier to live with. No faffing with two other software programs to sort out a ringtone without paying. No being tied to the evil empire.
2.Battery life is roughly 24hrs on my Desire with everything running.
3.Double Twist is one of probably many ways of transfering itunes music. I use the air sync method and can use my HTC as a media player through my PS3 aswell. Nothing like a touch of RATM when killing Zombies.
4.Choice of Apps can be found here.Have a look around. Most of the Big name apps will be available on both plaforms.
5.Customer services, can't comment haven't had to use them.
6. Your masculinity will be bolstered beyond belief. Remeber iphones are for those who want form over function (look at the pretty apple, ooooooh), usually the fairer sex.

Me - iPhone.

Daughter - 2 week old Samsung thing.

By mutual agreement, iPhone is brill' and does exactly what it says on the tin.

Samsung thing is a phone with clonky apps, some work well some work to sh1t and lock up/crash all the time (talking mainstream stuff here like Facebook). Also phone op system is non intuitive and clonky.

I went for HTC desire. Reasons....
Haggled with orange and got it on contract for £27 per month instead of the £35 and it does everything well

calendar links into Ical on mac book.

What else would I want?
I don't know of any one that has haggled a deal with Iphone.
A quality piece of kit.

I have just got the Samsung Galaxy S11 and it's a great bit of kit.
Thinner than my old iphone
Bigger screen than the iphone
Better camera than iphone
Longer battery life
Lots of free tricky things on it
IT WAS FREE

£240 QUID SAVED TO SPEND ON THE GS

My thoughts..

I test these things for work....

Iphone:
Very nice but intrusive on the computer, pain in the bum to change computers (I know "theres an app for that") the nicest to hold...lovely design, expensive.

Android:
You can do more with it, less restrictive policy from google, more of a nerds phone, more complicated to use, the one I tend to use for work, free online sat nav (online....no internet access no satnav)

Windows 7 phone:
A marmite interface, very good integration with a PC (as the Iphone is if you use a MAC), personally my favorite to use but lacking in apps at the minute but they're coming, everything is seamlessly integrated.

the misses and 2 of my daughters have htc's and theyve all had problems and have had to go back for updates and repairs my iphone has had no problems (touchwood)

Had my Desire for just under a year now and had no problems. It works great and despite Apple saying there are more apps, which there is there are an awful lot of them doing the same thing. I can do what I want with the phone and not what Apple says I can do. Other half has a wildfire and she loves that as well. Say no to the Apple tax and go Android. There is a reason that it is the largest used phone OS out there.

Horses and courses really mate, having had 3GS, IPhone 4 and a work android they all have plusses and minuses.

My own money is paying for an iPhone 4 so that says it all really, if it ain't an iPhone...........etc

HTC Desire S on O2 - £21.50/ month and free phone.

Miles better than blackberry & more flexible than an I Phone (and a hell of a lot cheaper!)

As far as I can tell Google license the Android software as Open-Source so thats why it has been snapped up by the phone makers they have something like 36% of the market compare to Apple's 17%.
