I am still running my XT1 and my iPhone on my motorcycle. Both run the same bespoke routes ie. routes I have created myself in MyRoute’s Routeplanner app, using my iPad and / or iPhone.
The iPhone I use is a sacrificial phone, with no SIM card.
The XT1 and the iPhone are both powered directly by the bike. To power the phone, I use Peak Design’s very good wireless charger mount.
I have never had a problem transferring routes from MyRoute to my XT1, using Garmin’s Connect app. By default, I chose version 1.1 simply because it brings over the blue shaping points with it.
My iPhone’s screen is pretty much the same size as the popular Chinese ‘mirroring’ screens. Having one less connection in the chain is beneficial, in my opinion.
My XT1 sits in its Garmin mount, the one supplied in the box. Neither the phone nor the XT1 have ever jiggled or vibrated around so much that they have become disconnected or fallen off. I have no additional ‘security’ to prevent walk away thefts.
I receive voice instructions from both devices via my Ultimate Ear dual channel in-ear monitors. Bluetooth connection to both devices is quick and reliably stable thereafter. The only change I have made is to make the phone’s ‘voice’ male, so that I can tell it apart from the XT1’s default female voice.
Both have performed faultlessly. The phone / MyRoute combination scoring ahead, only because I can create bespoke routes for it (and as such for my XT1) on my iPad or directly in the phone. Of course I could create bespoke routes directly on my XT1 (as opposed to bringing my MacBook with me). I simply find it easier on my iPad / phone.
