Annoying Rattle

I get an annoying rattle from the front of my 05 12GS when I go over bumps at low speed. It almost sounds like a vibration as if something is loose. I thought it was coming from the screen, so tightened up the pivot points at the lower front. This seemed to stop it for a while, but it seems to be back again already. Has anyone else has similar problems? (I have checked the front fork upper yoke bolts as suggested in another thread and they were fine). (The noise seems to be coming from reasonably high up at the front - hence me looking at the screen attachments first off).

I get this too - first thought that it was loose tools under the seat - but it isn't - sounds like a couple of spanners rattling, but can't fathom it. Definitely not the loose screen issue on my bike at least.

weird!

most probably the screen; have you made this mod (replacing plastic parts with aluminium parts) ?

From the description, almost defo. a loose screen.

It does NOT vibrate at the adjusting wheels on the side but at the mounting points in front of the instrument pod. Easily fixed with a couple of rubber o rings.

If you run a search on the 1200 section there are some threads on how to do it.

Cheers guys. The time I managed to stop the rattle for a bit was when I adjusted the mounts in front of the instrument pod - the plastic inserts that go into the metal mounting tubes are certainly not the best fit and always seem loose. Where can I get the aluminium mod parts from (or is it a case of making some)?

Much cheaper to fit a couple of O rings on the spindles - what BMW dealers do to fix the rattle.

Shameless plug for Tobinator Vibration Eliminators. Yes, more expensive then O'rings but stops the BMW plastic bits eroding.

Linky to Nippy Norman's site

Threaded thingy goes through the front mounting tube securing the stainless steel end pieces very nicely.

Rattle

I had a high pitched buzz at certain RPMs and found that the right hand guard would vibrate against the brake line near the mastercylinder. Rotated it away and no more problems.

Uncanny that, just ordered some this afternoon from Nippy's Hope I'm not disappointed and the're as effective as the Torbinators :thumb

Tobers, having looked at yours and the ones from Touratech, will admit that yours look much better for eight quid or so more.

mine rattles to!

Hi all, I have been out today for the first time this year :D and found that there is a rattle especialy moving in low gear and occasionaly going over bumps.I checked the screen as this was my first thought but in all honesty couln't say it was loose  When I got home I checked around the bike and could not say that anything was obviously loose.
Until I checked the plate under the bike I believe it is sometimes referred to as the "bash plate" this seemed to have some play in it even though there are
rubber grommets in the fitting of this to the bike I thought this may be the culprit of the vibrating noise!

any thought on this anyone?

cheers for now djack

And now for something completely different.....

Well, as we're talking about causes of vibrations and rattles, here's another one.

I took both side panels off today, the left one to check out the fuel pump relay corrosion (a little on the surface, did a good clean and spray with FS365) and the right one because......well, I had the left one off so rude not to really.

Lo and behold, on both sides, a large hex-head bolt and washer dropped out from behind each of the panels. They came from what appears to be the upper mounting point for the fuel tank (I presume its the fuel tank, a black plastic thing that wraps around the front of the bike).

I had been meaning to examine the rattle I could hear at low speed. All back in place now.

Lucky not to have lost the bolts, I guess. If they had disappeared I would never have noticed them missing.

Screen rattle

I was rather surprised to see the complex device from Touratech that was on another GS being serviced alongside mine. The owner explained it was to stop the screen rattle; I showed him my solution - a rectangle, about 50mm x 30mm of foam rubber about 10mm thick wedged between the screen and mounting in the front; all neatly concealed with a small Union Jack! It worked as soon as I fitted it about 18 months ago - and I had forgotten it was there.
