It's not the price I mind - it's the principle (or lack thereof) behind the price.

If you're in the habit of having your LC serviced by a BMW franchise, watch out for them not bothering to have changed the billing codes on their systems to accomodate the LC bikes.

On Monday afternoon, I picked up my bike from it's final warranty-related service.
I always check all items on the itemized bill, and one in particular caught my eye. Around R118 for 500ml of rear-drive fluid. Since the rear drive only uses 180ml, this would mean being charged for 320ml that isn't used on the bike. How handsome!
Pointing this fact out to the service advisor, he didn't miss a beat. "It's also used in the gearbox", he says. Really? On a bike where the engine, gearbox and clutch all share the same oil? I picked up immediately that he was bulls#!tting, because even if he were talking about the old gearbox, 320ml wouldn't be anywhere near enough to fill it (it takes just over 1.5 litres).
At this, he changed tack again. "Oh well, that's the bill for a major service on the air-cooled bikes. We haven't changed it to accomodate changes on the new bikes." (Implying that since no one else has complained, what right have I?)
And the dealer's profit margin must have plenty of room for error, because when he saw I wasn't going to drop the issue, the service advisor simply struck that line item from the bill.

The morals of this spurious story:
  1. Watch out for dealers who try to fleece you using preposterous excuses.
  2. Watch out for service advisors who don't believe a customer could know a bike better than they do.

Well done for catching them out, and standing your ground.:thumb

spoke to my dealer tech and told them im putting my own oil in prior to service..good stuff not that castrol shite, he didnt give a shite either:D

You should be grateful you got clean oil in your final drive ! I was billed for it and it wasn't even changed

Hang on thinking about it if they think it holds 500mm theres a chance they never changed your final drive oil as well.....

Shit. Now you're making me paranoid...
It wouldn't be a bad idea to check, anyway. I mistrust dealer service staff on principle - they have a financial incentive to do the work, but no real incentive to do it well. I know how the game is played - I used to be a technician at a franchised dealership.

Why would he/they?

He says its ok, saves him a job, they dont know..if you read the posts from above wouldn't anyone want to change their own oil..its not rocket science, you know what you pay for is going in the bike and you know its been done...properly
rubbing the filter with a rag and saying its been done is nothing to what happens

Am i missing something?

You know all of the above and still went to a dealer?

Why?

Can you not do it yourself? Former 'technician'.....i rather my bike was worked on by a mechanic when needed.

Are dealer stamps that necessary? Are you planning on only keeping the bike for 2 years and then want to sell it with FSH?

Jeez, people who used to ride bikes actually rode the things and oil changes etc were done by owners.......wow times have changed.

Yes times have changed. Motorcycling has changed from a way of transportation to a "leisure" persuit much like jet sking. The expected average mileage is now 4000 at a push. We talk about a biking season. Biking is now a lifestyle choice and one is expected to buy into a brand. You won't see any grease about a dealership these days substituted by a coffer machine and very glossy brochures. People have changed too. Most don't want to be getting their hands dirty any more. JJH

As per normal at work I mark all service bolts @ 12 o'clock that way I no if they have been undone as the marks never realign, I carry this across onto my bikes because I want to no what has and what has not been done correctly.

Pretty much sums me up, I do use the bike in the Winter but nowhere near as much.

Make sure they don't charge you for doing the tappets at the 6,000 miles service on an lc as they only need doing every 12,000 miles

Dealerships....techs...apprentices....servicing by others..and £££££ signs.
Gives me the shivers even tho its 23' outside....

I do all my own including during the guarantee period. Like dong it and would rather spend the huge amount saved on other things.

Leaving aside the ' I do it myself' aspect for a second......

This isn't a 'scam'.

It's a crime, called 'fraud'.

Charging someone for something that clearly hasn't been done, or even in this case, CANNOT be done.....that's a criminal act, pure and simple.

I was embarrassed by asking the same question about FD oil on my bill, but it turned out I was looking at the unit price for a ltr of oil , the actual price charged was in the margin for the 180cc used.........:blast

Warranty Preservation

Correct me if I'm wrong but in order to preserve your warranty don't you have to get all servicing done by BMW (or a certified garage)? I like to do my own servicing and loathe the thought of paying through the arsehole for routine servicing.
