Hi fellas,
Can I just start by saying that I'm not a mechanic but can manage minor service type stuff filters, fluids belts and general maintenance etc. My bike is an '01 1150 GS single spark non abs with just over 27k on the clock.
I have owned it for about 12 months and am a great advocate of the earplug solution but recently I've noticed a really annoying squeak from the front of the engine when I start the engine from cold. After 10 minutes or so when the engine is warm it disappears.
I thought alternator belt, but I've checked that and that seams fine and the tension is fine so I ran a small amount of mech oil down behind the bottom pulley and the cold squeak is cured. Now, that says bearings to me. Is this a major problem, just a cold start squeak cured with a bit of oil or the tip of a large expensive iceberg.

Sounds as if the seal behind the lower pulley maybe at fault.
It's not that difficult to change, but I would live with the minor squeak for now

The bottom pulley is attached to the crank.

Yes that's what I thought. Crank bearings mean engine strip? Beyond me. I'll have a look at the seal behind the lower pulley as NeilDD mentioned that might be doable if not I'll have to put my earplugs in earlier.
