Another damned oil thread

I use the oil my local car garage (independent) gets in 40 gallon barrels - he has 10-40 and 20-50, semi synthetic - he charges me £5 for a fill up and I do the change myself - so he doesn't really know howmuch I am pouring in - but he says it more than covers it. Bikes have done plenty miles without any adverse engine wear - I reckon 187,000 miles without anthing on the engine other than one exhaust valve guide isn' too bad.......so I would say this oil is high enough grade - it is rated for modern turbo engines, even high performanc eones.:thumb2

Called in at millers the other day good selection and very helpful
bought some special gearbox oil for my lambretta

they have been going a long time and i will be calling in again to get to gearbox oil and final drive
have been using castrol semi up till now
if you only live 15 mins away you must live next door to me

Another vote for Millers here. I went for the Classic 20/50 Mineral Oil which is SJ rated and 19.99 for 5 litres. So far so good - it's still using a bit at 14k miles.

I must win the 'Closest to Millers' contest as the bike lives about 600m away on top of the hill behind. They are always helpful and we had one of the technical guys as a guest speaker at WYAMS a couple of years back which was fascinating for the oil geeks.

Hello Chugga what bike do you ride, if your only in Brighouse I may see you about from time to time.

With regard to oil usage, prior to using the semi synthetic 20w50 I used Castrol semi synthetic 10w40 as supplied at services, this ran through it like cats pee, have just done 1400mls through France & back with high speeds involved, fully loaded & just a token squirt to top up, with the added bonus of a clean number plate, result as far as I'm concerned, the bike has done 10,500 in total.

Has anyone used Harley Davidson own brand 20/50 synthetic? I'm not sure how much it costs but at least it's easily available. Rock Oil make a reasonably priced semi-synth 20/50 high spec oil which I've used in all my Boxers and Harleys for a few years now, It's cheaper than the Millers classic 20/50 mineral.

My uncle btw owns some russian sidecar outfit, he was recommended this Miller classic oil by the guy who sells/ services/ takes um to bits like. He really rates it.

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your uncle is Tarka:blast
