Noticed a bit of hesitation on light throttle on the way home. Then doing whist doing an overtake it felt like somebody had put the brakes on for a split second.

So I took it steady then all of a sudden it stalled and locked the back wheel up - I quickly pulled in the clutch. The bloody thing won't re-start now. Luckily I was at the end of my commute, only 1/2 mile from home.

Now waiting for BMW Assist. Fekkin pile of sh!t, should have stuck with Hondas:mad:

Commiserations, I felt the same when my last Honda went dead in Strasbourg and cost me £600 to get fixed and then did the same again at the ferry. Let us know what they find.

I know what you mean,i felt the same when my cam sensor went although it got me home and to the shop ok.
Funny enough though i was speaking to two people on the weekend who han new model Yam R1's and they both had been stranded with ecu and fueling problems..

Sounds like the fuel pump symptoms though I'm surprised it locked the back wheel which makes it more likely that its mechanical.

Paul

oh dear :(

When you pulled in the clutch i presume the rear wheel rotated again?

I recall reading that someone had the valves or the piston go? that would certainly seize the motor

Update:

Don't think its mechanical - thinking about it again the wheel locked when I let the clutch out after pulling it in initially, it was just the inertia of the motor.

I'd cranked it every 20min or so for a couple of hours and no effect. Disconnected/re-connected the battery - no effect. When BMW assistance turned up it started first time:mad: , but then died after anyway.

The bike now starts, runs real rough, then dies and a loud noise (just like the brake servos) is heard to continue afterwards. I suspect this might be the fuel pump/injectors (?). Already had the mod done to the fuel pump controller, so I doubt that it is this.

Anyway, a bit cheesed off at the moment - and its cast doubts over ownership post warrenty (March '06)

Sorry to hear about your problems GSMonkey.
Sounds like you have one of the earliest bikes there.
I know what you mean about post warranty worries though.
But with a bit of luck all the niggles will be ironed out by then.

On a brighter note . I had one of the best rides of my life on any motorcycle last Sunday, most of it was down to where and how far I could go with ease on my 1200. Almost 250 miles across to the lakes from Tyneside, a big loop of fantastic roads through the Lakes and then home again, only stopping for photos and petrol!!

Keep the faith! :beerjug:

Commiserations GSMonkey hope you get it sorted soon. Rear wheel locking sounds like gearbox or final drive to me!

Further Update:
BMW Emergency took it to my local dealers this morning (Prestige). They wouldn't take it to Vines where I got it from, because is wasn't the nearest.

The guy a Prestige didn't want to take it because he was booked up for two weeks, but BMW Emergency forced him to take it. I wasn't best pleased about that, so rang Vines who manage to get it transferred.

Still waiting for a diagnosis, but it prompted me to look at other bikes again.....got an interesting deal on an 05 Fireblade:D

£50 as a non-runner, to break for spares..............cause it ain't going anywhere at present

:D :D :D :D :D

virtually the same thing yesterday

except I was using the Gilera Runner. It is due it's annual service and MOT in April (I noted this when cleaning both this and the GS on Sunday). Yesterday the drive belt snapped and locked the rear wheel, spat me off at but luckily only after I had slid upright for some distance so when I came off it was pretty slow.

So am on the GS today!

Had the fuel pump mod couple of weeks ago. And that has really been my only problem with the bike (touch wood and all that). I know this won't please those who have suffered major faults, but;

Is the GS12 really any worse than any other new model, from any manufacturer?

Or

Has the internerd and these chat rooms just made comparrisons that much easier that now we all get to hear about each and every failure?

Just heard from the garage.........the fuel pump this time (controller done a while back).

Its the second break down and its on a 'three strikes and its out' deal with me:)

Just got to get it from Guildford to Bromley now(BMW 'Emergency' won't shift it )

Spoke to the mechanic....apparently the fuel pump was full of water (motor, not pump impellor). A technical bulletin has just come out on the subject (this week) and I've now got the updated version of the fuel pump (Rev 3)

Ooo, they are nice when they work - Vines had cleaned it up a treat.

The oil leak I thought was an oil leak was grease being pushed out of a seal.

The front of the engine is being replaced under warrenty (with a load of other fasteners as well).

All is forgiven for now:D :D :D
