My 57 plate GS has joined the fuel gauge death list as well.
Symptoms as other - random empty to full readings before complete death.
Just had it replaced (fortunately under extended warranty - £50 excess only - as I was told it would have been £200+ otherwise).
When asked, the service guy admitted:
(i) there had been a load of known failures
(ii) although float option would fit, electronics blocked it's use
(iii) all 2011 GS onwards used float so should be OK
