Hi Tossers,

Got my GS two days ago after ten years of riding a very economical yet small Suzuki van van.
I rode RT80's for a courier company (1985) for six months and knew from then the Beemers had a reliable & virtually
indestructible build quality that I could only aspire to owning due to cost (kids, wife & unemployment.. you know the score).

Well, here we are, the kids have left home, the wife does her own thing and I now own an "07" 25k, GS with panniers, running lights & crash bars.
I took it out for the first time Sunday, not really knowing if I could get my head around the sheer size & power of a 1200!
No test drive, just jumped straight in and rode the damn thing.

OMG it's so fooking comfortable, the seat, the riding position, the commanding view you have of the road and with a little surprise the respect you get from other
drivers gawping at such a fantastic machine that looks down on them with "God-like" reverance. And not's let forget the sheer exhilaration of the front end lift off as
I tested the acceleration and the sphincter clenching relief of those "Brembo's" engaging, bringing me back to sub-light-speed that I had relied on so many years ago.
OK, Monday morning, it's pissing with rain and I'm off to work. Usually I'm soaked by the time I get to work, but the only real soaking I got was a "Full-face" power-shower to my open face helmet, boots stayed dry enough not to have to suffer the "wet-sock" syndrome and I managed the journey with far less H2O adsorbed than expected. note: I'm getting some better boots.

I have reached Nirvana, I am at one with the world & my bike, my name is Guy, thanks for reading.

Every time I read a story like this it makes me sad that I still have 25 days to go until I get mine.

Great write up.

I had the same colour combination and loved it. I have some spare hand-guard extensions if you want them? Drop me a pm with your address and i'll stick'em in the post.

Thanks for your replies Tossers,
I kind of wanted to share a "Broken virgins" first time experience that would enlighten those that were still waiting to albeit with trepidation get to grips with their GS.
I'm three days in...
1) WATCH YOUR SPEED - I can't get further than 2nd gear in a 30mph area and even then I get "Throttle-creep" above that, it's way too easy to find exceeding the speed limit is acceptable, which of course only results in points & fines, I seem to be "riding the clutch" more so than I ever had to do with my van van .
2) The Clutch - I'm not a big bloke, and I was expecting something akin to driving a tractor with the vision of having to use both hands on the lever to change gear, well fear-not, it's as easy as falling off (not that I would recommend that) it's just like any other m/cycle.
3) Learn what all those god-damn buttons do & where they are! - I'm still fumbling around like a first-date trying to find the indicator cancel, I know where it is, I just can't get it first time. (Not that them pesky car drivers know how to use theirs anyhow).
4) RELAX - I've found myself gripping the handle-bars like I was in fear of being ripped off the wings of a SR-71 at take-off!
5) PATIENCE - I can't fit through the gaps in traffic I'm used to but then again I'm riding something three times the size, it's more about the "Presence" & being seen than zipping through the herd of morning-motorists racking up a high score of car wing-mirrors (non intentional).

As a addendum to my first post on how wet I didn't get, I forgot to mention the following:
The Windshield - The full face power-shower negated the full-frontal jacket soaking usually endured.

Day 4 - Frosty morning & county roads...the joys of motorcycling. stay tuned ;)

Plus 1! Had mine since the start of January, 1200GSA LC

Guy,

They are brilliant all round good bikes. It seems once you have had a GS its virtually impossible to not have one, so goddam useful are they.

Dont pay too much attention to the doomongers on here with reports of faults with driveshafts, corrosion, this and that, blah blah, i have had numerous GS's and other Beemers and apart from minor issues here and there same as any other bike, never really had a problem or a major failure despite putting on some decent mileage on and off road in all sorts of shit conditions.

Enjoy it, and welcome to the forum.

(Bet he gets and airhead soon enough chaps)

i have had my gs just a week, and managed to get out on it for the 1st time on sunday , what a revelation. like guy says you've got to keep an eye on the speedo
