Hi All,

I believe this is my first thread here, so go easy on me if any comments. :D

Thinking that my 5.9 height would be a serious issue while test driving a magnesium colored Adv yesterday, I can tell you all that it was one of the most relaxed rides I had so far.

Asked the dealer to swap the Adv seat to a regular GS seat + low position. Leaning towards the tank I could flat foot both feet. I think I also should simply try the regular seat in low. (have bmw Pro-Touring boots) Piece of cake.

Compared to my current 2006 F800ST, the tank and plastics around it shake noticeably. Drove away slowly, playing around with 2-3 gear for 5 minutes, and before I knew it I steered the mighty pig into twisties from right to left and over road bumps as if they were not there.

The view is great high up there. You have a greater sense of safety when peeking over the roof of cars, or through windows of SUV's. Lovely !

Stability is marvelous, no other words. I found the GSA easy to control a slow speed or manouvre around corners and other obstacles.

Not too impressed with the sound of the standard muffler, but it was enough to raise awareness with other drivers I overtook.

The standard GS seat I had placed by the dealer was very comfortable. This can be more than enough for the longer rides. The rather vertical seating position proved very relaxed for my taste, I like it.

The handlebars feel to be a bit thinner than I have on my F800.
Changing gears is smooth, accompanied by these German engineered functional sounding clunks.

Final Verdict: Difficult to whipe that smile off after the ride, could get a potential buyer like me in trouble if noticed by the salesman. This is one hell of a machine for the roads. Will go on vacation in November and will be tempted to trade in my F800 straight afterwards. Time will tell, so keep looking in the "Let's see your 1200GS" thread to find me sooner rather than later. I salute the Bavarian pigs farm. :beerjug:

Pig

Yep, made me smile as well and a good honest write up.

The 1200 ADV is definately a beast but one of the most satisfying rides you will ever have but for gods sake don`t tell Mrs Bilko I said that:eek:

We`ll wait for the pics of the new 1200 because your whole holiday will be spent deciding what colour to have. Aftermarket black is best and fastest:thumb2

I hear there is a big waiting list for Adventures in Holland.

Bought my adventure 3 weeks ago, already racked up 3000km's, realy enjoyable bike to ride :thumb2

Actually...........I got an update from my BMW dealer today stating he cannot order the R1200GS Adv anymore, at all ! No news about what this production stop actually means. He has submitted a request for more info with BMW and I will contact him later this week. Finally I got to the point of actually test riding one, it all seems to be further away than ever.
Will keep you updated.
Cheers

As you can`t order a new one and a facelift is coming up, hold on for a while and when the new one appears, there wil be plenty of really nice used ones as people trade in for the latest version.

Not everyone uses them as they should be and there will be the posers who just want the latest toy and their "old" ones will be mint condition and fully loaded with the Touratech catalogue!!:thumb

Thanks for the appreciative responses so far to you all, about my first impression of the Adv.

I simply cannot believe that dealers cannot take down orders, even for the longer term. I will call one of the biggest European dealers tomorrow (Van Harten in Amersfoort NL) to double check the story of the production stop.:eek

Concerning the facelift effect on older models, as Sgt. Bilko mentiones, even a minor facelift can make a difference. Would be tempting to get a newer one. Don't need to have the newest gadget at all times, but for a whopping 19k Euro I would prefer to have an updated version. Let us see what is true or false and, if applicable, the updated version is just as a pretty hog as the 2007 model.:D

So I called Van Harten today, one of the dealers who sells BMW's in great numbers. Same story. Cannot order anything for the time being. He can only sell me from stock, which is also okay. In that case I would check out the 2 demos my own dealer has in the showroom. (Has all options)

I was in the same position as you 3 weeks ago, I went for a 3 month old GSA, with 3dkm's on it.

Not a demo bike, but from a shortarse with too much money :aidan

Full options, first 2 stamps in the book, which i would have had to pay for within 2 weeks if i had bought from new!! For the price of a new bike without options!

I dont give a toss about minor facelifts, im happy with what i got!

And who knows, once the new model is for sale and you waited till youve actualy got the bike, it will be at least Febuary!

Wonder if they're going to take it into the ugly forest and slap it's face with a cricket bat?

BMW is good at that...C1 (from the start), Car: 7 series in 2005, R1200 cruiser. I don't believe in any dramatic changes to this golden goose.
So I checked out what the demo's were at my dealer. One (red-uniwhite) didn't exist, was already sold weeks ago. The other (Grey/Magnesium)was being sold for some person who drove 500 km on it and stopped for unknown reasons. Same case as Matt describes I figure.
So the long wait until March/April is to commence today.:blast

Just to conclude this nice little thread, here are the final options I took. (Last one was added today !)

1. Safety Pack:
ABS, RDC, ASC

2. Comfy Pack:
BC, Heated grips, Chrome exhaust (Bling)

3. Fog Lights

4. Alarm

5. Cross Strut with padding, or whatever the extra steering reinforcement is named

6. Navigator bracket (For my Zumo 550)

7. ESA (OMG what have I done !)

Still to be worked out with the dealer is:
* The seat, probably a GS regular so I can flat foot both feet.
* Metzeler Tourances (whatever comes out of stock, I want the MT's !)
* Zumo placement (fit directly to the Navigator bracket or with a TT holder)

33 Days to go before D-Day.

Wooohooo. :clap What colour did you go for?

Magnesium metallic matt, or dark, or grey, whatever they call it. I've seen may pics of the Red, I do like it, but it's not my cup of tea. Moreover most of my 5 jackets match the Magnesium GS much better.

@Kiwiadventure: Yes, maybe so, but I'm pretty sure with a slightly lower seat I would be more confident in handling the big fat pig whenever I would step into a hole, or trying to move inbetween traffic etc.

Found a BMW dealer who actually adjusts the ADV stock seat by removing 3 cm of height. That would do it for me.:D

Had a good look around the new 12GSA and the budget 12GS this weekend.

I liked the bike in red, but I didn't like the seat, but I guess i'd fit the standard low seat off the gs as i have with my current GSA

The ESA suspension looked trick with plenty of settings, in the extreme off road
setting the bike was very tall. But there are plenty of other settings that should ensure comfort, the ESA appears to control both ride height and damping

It dosn't seem possible to fit the BMW cruise control to the GS/A

Bars and ancillaries looked well sorted, the top yolk and risers looked neat and tidy. The handguard and brackets looked tidy

Front suspension wishbone appears to be a new item, and chatting to a few that have ridden them, the new bikes seem to feel more planted, this may be due to ane steering geometry, which is a shame (IMO) as I like the lively, fast steering feel of the 1200's

The new tank covers on the budget 1200 appear to offer more protection for the air intake from water ingress.

Starter cover has been removed on the GSA ? Not sure why, maybe just looks:nenau

The orange on the basic 1200 is horrible, but i liked the blue and the Dark Grey.

After a chat with people that have ridden them the engine appear to give a better spread of power and the gear ratios have been altered to suit, apparantly giving the bike the impression of a more than 5bhp power hike.

Forks on the GS looked poor with gloss black features but the 'gold' looked good, as do the new design alloy wheels with the new colour matching the rocker covers.

Everywhere i looked on the bikes there were little detail changes that makes the standard GS look like almost a new model

Looks good:thumb2

Sucked out of the R12GSA by another BMW...

Well guys, it has been fun while it lasted. Wanted to wish you all well, enjoyed this forum very much, thanks for all the valuable advise you have given me and not to forget the fun provided.

My R1200GSA from 2008 has been traded in shorty before my vacation end of October.

I'm not burning any bridges, but the upcoming years I will be riding a K1600GT. As you may know a totally different beast with a totally different riding experience and applicability.

Anyway, wish you all well and until we meet again.
Adios !

Good for you!

That is what motorcycling is all about! If you start being sensible and weighing up all the options you might as well stay in the car or ride a scooter. Pop in here on your new bike - Holland to Lyon and back and it will be nicely run in (fit a radar detector though.)
