Anti Puncture Gel

Has anyone had any experience of using one of the aftermarket puncture gels ?
I am away on my GSA on a month long trip to Europe, and quite like the idea of reducing my liability to punctures!

They do work but if you get a nail in your tyre and the leak gets sealed you could ride around for a while doing more damage leading to a major blowout. I like the the tyre pressure control on the bmws. then you can have plenty of warning to do what you see fit my own favourate is a can of sealentthe you can get it properly fixed in a garage or do it yourself

If you have the pressure sensors in the wheel don't use any type of gunk it will knacker them.

We have had good results with puncture safe

I would not bother with gunks and mousses, use a stop and go dry plug kit off ebay. Fitted literally dozens as a breakdown patrol and never had one leak.
The tyre can be repaired properly when able because no glues are used.

All well and good but no help in a high speed puncture at least with puncture safe the tyre deflates in a controlled manner or not at all. Used it for years and has saved a number of extended trips around Europe. I do also carry a plug kit which has been used with puncture safe in the past with great results.

But like everything you get opinions from both sides, although IMHO some of the negative opinions are from those who have never used it.

I enjoy trotting out my story of being amongst a largegroup of bikes in morocco, only one rider using puncture gel/sealant.
He was the only one to get a puncture, twice Both times instant deflation.

Oh how we laughed.

They can (not always and it depends how fast you want to spank it ) play havoc with your wheel balancing. Ruined my trip to the Nurburgring many years ago .....

I'd rather take a compressor and a stop 'n go kit ....

Those items saved my recent trip to France.

Puncture on the very first day at 130kph, just felt my arse end going saggy and (via comms) asked another bike to pull up and see if my tyre was punctured. It was so we pulled in without any drama.

A puncture kit with the sealant adhesive rope-type plugs was used to fix the hole and mini compressor run off the battery inflated tyre. Back on the road in short time and actually still going strong after run down to Provence and back to Dover and now Cheshire to Co. Kildare and back. And commuting to work in between.

I've used both puncture sealing gels and plugs and my preference is with the plug-type kits. They fix fairly big holes and the tyre can be fixed anywhere without upsetting the tyre fitters by making them clean out the gel first. They could even refuse to fix it and say it needs to be a new tyre.

A word of caution with the Stop and Go kit because they say that if the hole is at an angle the plug will not seal and an attempt to repair should not be made. This is not an issue with the rope-type plugs.

Bottom line is you should use whichever kit or method gives you that warm fuzzy feeling and gives you confidence in the bike or confidence in your abilities to cope with a puncture and get back on the road.

Nope wouldn't want them if I can't feel that my tyres aren't right then I ain't in tune with my bike.

Its like most modern technoligy remember everyone slaging abs brakes? Power steering? seatbelts traction control ect. You dont have to rely on it but it can help.

TPS is a great thing on a bike.
