Anti-virus software recommendations

My two penny worth either AVG or Kaspersky, the are very similar and use the same scanning engine, I use kaspersy, I find the interface easier, but for cost the free version of AVG is the best AV available, but make sure if u just have AV that u use a good firewall as well. Again I use the Kaspersky Internet security suite which is AV firewall and spyware all in one, but for stand alone firewall then zone alarm is by far the best.

i read that Steganos is exactly the same as Kaspersky, but cheaper. might be worth checking it out.

i use ESET NOD32.

ESET NOD32 is what I have due to numerous recomendations and its very good with no niggles associated with some and the absolute pita associated with McAffee and Norton.

ESET have just released a new version in the last few days too available free for licenced users by the way

If anyone is interested then have a look at the PC Pro website, the A list section is a good place to get recommendations also they regulary test all the various AV and internet security suites, they also state which ones use the same scanning engine's.

Lots of the various companies use the same basic software and just change the interface and rebadge it.

Yup - I've tried to download others, but the issue is definitely with security settings on my PC.

Try Avira. Like AVG it's free for the basic version. I've been using it for about four years with no problems. it updates itself every 24 hours, or every time I switch on.

I also use Spy-bot S&D. The only time I've had a virus was when I had Norton; I picked up the 'sobigF' a few years back. Norton told me I had it, wouldn't let me do anything else until I'd got rid of it, but it couldn't get rid of it. I ended up using a little 'shredder' program I got courtesy of MacAfee. I also shredded Norton..

What is the best way of ridding a PC running XP of Norton please? From earlier threads it would appear using the standard Windows facility for removing unwanted programmes is insufficient.
