Now that AVG is becoming pay per view - ie you won't keep getting free updates and it will effectively become obsolete unless you pay - i was looking around for the next best free software.

So far i've found this - Active Virus Shield - free from AOL ( so there may be a hidden catch i'm not aware of yet ) http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp?

this - Comodo http://www.comodogroup.com/products/free_products.html

and Avira http://www.free-av.com/

Also - here's a site for comparisons

any comments welcome ;)

If you think AVG is going to stop being free because of the little message you got, I think you are wrong. The (badly worded) message was saying that the OLD free version of AVG was being stopped, and that you must update to the new FREE version of the software.

If you think AVG is going to stop being free for another reason - please let me know what it is :thumb

He's right. I have downloaded the new version (7.5) and the messages have stopped. You can get it here http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

Avast is damn good. Been using it for several years now.

I've been using Avast for a while now. Very satisfied.

I got fed up with AVG as it was giving false positives on some files on a website my son kept visiting. The first couple of times I went into full paranoia mode but a couple of runs of web based tools fromTrendmicro Housecall, Symantec and Bitdefender persuaded me to ditch AVG.

Avast seems to run fine in conjunction with the anti-spyware tools Spybot & Windows Defender. Every now and then I run one of the web based tools mentioned above and I've always found my system to be virus/spyware free.
