Any cyclists? - UKGSer now on Strava

I'm in. And straight onto the leaderboard :D David Wallis is my proper name and I'm mostly a road cyclist, probably do as many pedal powered miles as petrol powered. Where does the time go? who knows?

Seeing your post I thought it might be an idea if we could relate UKGSER handles to Strava ones.... on Strava I'm Derek J

It’s always good to start an argument, so here goes: should Zwift, or any turbo rides/indoor activity, be logged on Strava or should it limited to proper cycling/running?

My two penneth FWIW.... As long as the ride is defined as a Virtual Reality ride on Strava no problem. I use BigRingVR quite a lot (HD video of real routes) and the Strava times and segments I've recorded are pretty close to what I've done in real life.... Tourmalet, Luz Ardiden, Hautacam. There's no way these can be considered an easy option.
Sitting on a turbo for the best part of 2 hours on the Tourmalet was hard work.
I did Col del'Iseran this morning... an hour of pain.
One thing that is true on VR rides though are some of the times/speeds recorded, very dependent on the software package and turbo used. I've seen some totally unrealistic segment times that would put all of the professional peleton in the shade.

So with VR rides I think you very much need to measure yourself against your own performance and not get too concerned about others.
Having said that, in a lesser way that can be said of any Strava segment times.... was it a solo ride or a chaingang, what was the wind doing etc.

Paul M on Strava.

Most of my rides are VR (Zwift) due to work!

Agree

Given that the crap weather is now settling in I was wondering what trainer software packages were being used.

I'm primarily using BigRingVR which is HD video rides from across the world. Very good gradient transitions and dashboard, can ride against others, new rides coming all the time.
I also use, occasionally a package called VeloReality which is similar but not as good IMO. It does have the ability to create workouts controlled by ERG which can be useful.

I haven't tried Zwift but I guess I should give it a go sometimes.
TrainerRoad looks good but I'm not sure I'm dsiciplined enough to enter into a program.

I did give Road Grand Tours a brief test (a bit Zwift like) but thought it was a bit flaky.

The turbo fans I talk to all seem to go for Zwift. Though a full package: trainer, front wheel raise device to simulate hills, large screen to render the experience realistic would come in at well north of £1500. Seems a bit salty for me, you could buy a nice pair of carbon wheels for that.

You're right, Zwift is doing good business especially with their recent subscription price hike. Not sure you really need the "full package" though. A smart trainer, big fan and ideally a decent sized screen.

Fulgaz is the one I use the most, I think it’s similar to bigringvr but I also have a subscription to Bkool.

I use my iPad with a hdmi lead to a 32in tv.

I tried zwift but didn’t like the “ tron “ feel/ look.

I used to have Bkool subscription but let it lapse in favour of BigRingVR and buying a few rides from Veloreality.

One thing I do like with BRVR is that I can create my own rides very easily..... just film it (Gopro) and record the ride (Garmin). Same start and end point for both and put in a particular BRVR folder and job done. Very easy and they ride well.

I have entered the London to Paris in 24 hours challenge (May this year).

Is anyone else planning to do this one?

That should be a good challenge Paul. I've never thought of doing it myself but I can see the attraction. If I was fitter and wealthier I'd love to do one of the Haute Route events. https://www.hauteroute.org/

Very tough though.
