Any cyclists? - UKGSer now on Strava

Just joined up (Dave Wrightson). Got fit again after some cheeky sod on here fat shamed me before Xmas saying my airbag had gone off under my leathers :D

35lbs of lard off and the hills are so much easier again!

Nice bike Udders. Is that an original unmodified Kona frame? Can’t remember ever seeing one like it.

Anyone ride the HONC entries open 4th Jan
60 mile with usually 6000ft of elevation can be tough if wet and windy.
Sunday 5th April , it has been running for many years now with overs 1000 riders , very well organised.

Been doing some bike maintenance, seems there’s always something. In less than two years I’m on my 3rd bottom bracket, 3rd set of front wheel bearings, second set of rear wheel and freehub bearings, 3rd bottom headset bearing and don’t get me started on chains. I do use it once a week whatever the weather and it wears half mudguards in the winter.

No, I don’t jet wash it, and yes I do clean it after every dirty ride and clean and lube the chain. I also have a winter bike that sees most of the bad weather (it has full mudguards) and so far haven’t replaced anything except chains and brake pads.

What’s the experience of other cycling tossers?

Crikey , your not having much luck, re you using decent a decent BB and brackets etc ?

It’s a press fit BB and I don’t replace them myself but the mechanic who does tells me they are mostly all the same and anything more than a season is good for a press fit BB. I use “blue seal” wheel and headset bearings.

I got a 3 year old trek Emonda and do about 6000km of Alpine riding per season.
I change the back tryer, break pads and the chain every service.

Are you using muck off or similar degreaser? It sounds like you are flushing out the lubricant in ALL of the rotating parts. Also after the clean , are you re lubing with a solvent based product?

Reason I ask is I run three bikes 1 gravel , 1 road 1 mtb and do 2> 2.5 k miles a year. I recon I replace front wheel bearings every 3 years and free hub every 5 My bottom brackets last about 4/5 years.

My cleaning regimen is wash with soapy bucket after each dirty ride. So summer road bike only gets about half a dozen clens / year. Mtb every ride.

Good point made by Steve, muc off could be acting as a degreaser and removing the lube. It’s strong stuff, if I use it all I tend to dilute it when doing so.
