I have used a couple of "live" Linux distributions. They are a very nice way of evaluating an OS without going to the trouble of partitioning and installing. They are also, as you point out, a great recovery tool.

No idea about this one though. Looks hooky to me although the tools to do it are readily available e.g. http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

can i just boot from that on my xp machine with no ill effects? i don't see why not, just never even seen linux in operation.

to try linux live go to Mepis.com and try that - best thing i found during my xp troubles

Mind you Longhorn will be out soon...remember you will need 64bit for this though..
