where did I read that the commercial service is so under-demand that sailings in June-aug are frequently dropped?

Rosyth/Zeebrugge with Superfast did indeed cease in the autumn of 2009 but Norfolk line started it again in late spring 2010

The former Norfolkline ferry service between Rosyth and Zeebrugge has now closed. However if you need to travel to Europe, the Newcastle - Amsterdam ferry is the perfect alternative, and could save you time and money.
I traveled on the Immingham - Brevik ferry and came back via Gothenberg, Sweden last autumn, so a little more info for anyone interested.
Our ferry booking was made provisionally as DFDS said they may have to cancel it if one of there regular customer requests the same route and they are overbooked. ie, if they are busy you might loose your place…
The cabins are very nice indeed, best I’ve stayed in to date and include a little table area, settee and the normal shower and toilet. There is a dinning area with adjoining lounge inc a big flat screen tv, various sat tv channels but few in English and there is ether a DVD player and dvd’s or a video player and tapes, can’t remember which.
Meals are at set times, 3 times a day but in the dinning area there is unlimited tea/coffee etc and there is a fridge full of milk and juice at hand. Often there are snacks around so you won’t go hungry. You get exactly the same grub as the crew but they are on the other side of the boat. Take a book, no take two, and a dvd maybe…
There is no bar, entertainment or duty free but they do some times open a little kiosk for chocolate stuff and beer, ask.
Customs are very hit and miss, Hull departure, not interested… just a passport check.
Brevik were very suspicious of my arrival, asked lots of silly questions while trying to be my buddy LOL.
Gothenburg exit, quite high security, sign in at ID Services first (that’s a BIG tip) and all vehicles are escorted to the ferry from the entry gate (Port 6 gates), no strolling around, got it!
Hull arrival, no customs on site at all.
Be aware, as far as I could tell there are no waiting rooms or services for customers as you might find at normal ferry ports, and ferry times are distinctly odd… if it’s cold, dark and raining while you’re waiting to get on the ferry, its just hard luck…

Copy and past Lat/Long in to Google maps or Garmin mapping as you please, it could save you quite some anguish knowing where your supposed to be in the dark.
Lastly, I thought it a great way to get to Norway.

dont the Imm to Goth route a few times, last year it was a doddle but as a first timer its all a bit odd as there is no obvious place to wait or book in etc.
When you get to Gotherburg ferry on the way home do not forget to head past the ferry for about 500 yards ( follow the wagons ) all cargo and passengers need to book in at the house in the car park prior to getting on the ferry.
Was great last year as the World cup was one so we just sat there and watched footy all day and night.
Just booked up again yesterday, its nothing like the passenger ferry bookings and takes about 5 minutess from start to finish - No bullshit.

whilst I was waiting in the queue at Stavanger for the Hirshals boat - one of the Fjorline men told me that Fjordline were about to open up a stavanger / aberdeen route ........ no idea how true and when ...... but rumours are always good

If you do a bit Google... Apparently they are now building 2 new Ferries with an option on a third. Decision by May/June to take the third or not. It would be used on the Aberdeen route.

Now all I need to do is start a rumour that they are going to run a passenger ferry from Whitby to Moskenes and thats my trips sorted out for the rest of my life
I really like the Immingham to Gothenburg ferry but still miss the Newcastle to Stavanger ferry even if its just for the attempts at moonwalking in rough seas on the dance floor

what about the ferry that stops at Kirstiansand on route to Sweden? from memory it goes from inningham?
