Hi

I'm new to the world of the 1200GS - had it two weeks. I'm enjoying the bike and this forum. The one I bought (privately) is just under two years old and the warranty will expire in 6 weeks or so.

I have seen people in threads mention recalls, but googe can't find me a list of any for the bike (I thought manufactures had to advertise them so I assume there's a list somewhere - at least if there's been any). Can anyone tell me, or point me towards, a list of any recalls for this bike - and any tips on finding whether my bike has been done - so I can try and sort things out before the warranty expires.

Also given the apparent reliability problems with the bike, is there anything I'd be wise to check might need rectifying under warranty before finding the problem after the warranty has finished!

thanks for any help
Darren

If the bike has ABS there are a couple of things to look for.

00 60 137 brake check for BMW Motoarrad Integral ABS....mine was done Jan06.

Safety Recall: Re-routing of ABS cable sensor (should be attached to outside of left fork leg)...this was done Nov 06.

If in doubt contact your local dealer or give Customer Services 0800 777114

US NHTSA

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration database is searchable for recalls (amongst many other things)

Clicky

Walk through the menus and you'll find e.g. for an '04 R1200GS items related to:
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE: DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK

and for R-Series in general
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE: DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS

(Note: I just saw that they have the bike listed as R1200 GS & R 1200 GS, obviously you have to search for both to get the complete list)

Not sure if the list for recalls is exactly the same as in Europe/UK, but at least you can ask your dealer some informed questions...

Many thanks for the links - for intrest the following is a cut-and-paste from the UK VOSA site. It seems to closely follow the US recalls pretty much.

cheers

I bought mine privately with a month of warranty so I would advice firing it right into your nearest BMW dealer a couple of weeks before it expires.

They can check on the computer what recalls have been done.

You should also run though some of the items mentioned regularly on this site.

Especially, check for any oil, even small amounts along the swingarm/shaft. This means some seal has gone but is a big job to change. (more detail elsewhere on the site)

And if there is any corrosion at all, even the tiniest on the engine cover where it gets sprayed from the front wheel then ask for a new one under warranty. I spotted mine a couple of weeks too late but managed eventually to negotiate a "good grace" replacement.

Check shock absorbers for oil leaks, also look where the gearbox joins the engine if there is any sign of oil the mainshaft oil seals may have gone, both of these happend to my 06 gsa.
