Just booked into Epinal for a single night on our way to the Alps.

Originally planned to grab a hotel when we felt like stopping, but as it is Bastille weekend thought better have a booking in case the French all spring into life and fill up the Hotels.

Epinal was bang on our route and I quite like seeing new towns / cities, wondered if there is anything here we should check out, we will only have a few hours in the evening, or an hour on the way out the following morning.

Any "must see" sights, or fantastic restaurants here?

friend lives there on and off (crewe at teh mo) there (way aye fluent in frog :D)

have asked

Does it have to be in Epinal?

Yes, I have booked :D

Also about the limit of how far I want to have to travel on day one, will be OK if weather is nice, but is a long day if it turns to crap. I have the best part of a 3 hour trip to the Tunnel, so even if leaving at 6:30 in the morning I won't get to the Hotel until @ 6:00pm.

Originally planned to stop a bit further North (Toul / Nancy) but this Hotel came up at £50 with secure bike parking and a Pool / Hot Tub.

I thought being in a town may be nice for an evening stroll / food / beer as well

Fair enough, it's a decent schlepp from the coast :beerjug:

Epinal is a nice enough town, decent sized river and a good sized square.

There is a large American cemetery there, with graves from the 303rd Heavy Bombardment Group 'Hells Angels', if that floats your boat.

PS Several shops etc will be shut on Bastille Day.
