I have a Dianese armour suit I've done this with and it does feel good....Even with just a large rugby shirt over the top and a pacamac in a bag on the bike for the quick showers, it's great.
No idea what there is out there nowadays, but a couple of general tips.....
You want as much adjustability as you can get.
Removable panels are good, so you can wash the mesh layer underneath.....if not, it can get pongy after a bit of heavy duty use
Get one with a wide belt....6 inches or so....my Dianese's only fault is that the belly belt can end up rolling up a bit and digging into my gut......yes it's my fault for being a fat git, but the wider and less likely to roll and cut, the better.
Quality zips...YKK doubles or decent chunky zips.
Thumb straps are good....the wrist cuff extension that slips over your thumbs so the sleeves stay down rather than sliding up your arm in use or in an off.
Hard breast plates, not soft.
Have a look at the MX stuff online.......those guys race in this stuff, with only light overlayers, and it's mass produced and sold cheaply in that market segment.....you may find some manufacturer who is widely sold but lesser known (I must admit, the brand name Dianese caught my eye when i got mine, but I have no doubt I could have got better/as good stuff for less)
Oh, and don't be tempted to ride for too long with the armour and no top.....it looks dead cool, but you'll resemble a tea bag after an hour's riding.
