Went out for a ride the other day and just wore a fleece under a lightweight waterproof jacket, felt really light and easy to move in. Thought I may get some under armour and go this way for the summer.

Any recommendations for reasonably priced stuff?

Try Knox,

I've got a suit of theirs that I've had for a few years and you wear it under a flleece, but over a T shirt

It has shoulder, arm and back protection

Gericke do I lightweight underarmour jacket. Back, elbow and shoulder protectors. I use one under my Belstaff in the summer, works a treat and is quite well vented.

I have a Dianese armour suit I've done this with and it does feel good....Even with just a large rugby shirt over the top and a pacamac in a bag on the bike for the quick showers, it's great.

No idea what there is out there nowadays, but a couple of general tips.....

You want as much adjustability as you can get.

Removable panels are good, so you can wash the mesh layer underneath.....if not, it can get pongy after a bit of heavy duty use

Get one with a wide belt....6 inches or so....my Dianese's only fault is that the belly belt can end up rolling up a bit and digging into my gut......yes it's my fault for being a fat git, but the wider and less likely to roll and cut, the better.

Quality zips...YKK doubles or decent chunky zips.

Thumb straps are good....the wrist cuff extension that slips over your thumbs so the sleeves stay down rather than sliding up your arm in use or in an off.

Hard breast plates, not soft.

Have a look at the MX stuff online.......those guys race in this stuff, with only light overlayers, and it's mass produced and sold cheaply in that market segment.....you may find some manufacturer who is widely sold but lesser known (I must admit, the brand name Dianese caught my eye when i got mine, but I have no doubt I could have got better/as good stuff for less)

Oh, and don't be tempted to ride for too long with the armour and no top.....it looks dead cool, but you'll resemble a tea bag after an hour's riding.

DAMHIK :blast

Put crudely, getting smacked in the tit by a large stone thrown up at me from Timmyoneblonde's rear tyre :tears

I cracked my sternum about 12 years ago going up in the air and landing chest first on a handlebar end.....with no chest armour:tears

For impact protection areas, my gut feeling (IE no scientific evidence to back itup) is a hard shell to absorb point of impact and spread it across the area of the plate, with a softer foamy rubber (or some such material) underneath to cushion the spread impact.

Same principle as with crash helmets I guess, hard shell to disperse and stop intrusion, softer stuff inside to cushion the spread forces :nenau

I have an old RUKKA suit with arm armour that's like that hard plastic thick mesh you find inder milk crates (although softer and thicker)

When I rode my Funduro under a truck, it worked but i did end up with a large spread burn/scrape area under where that particular pad was.....i think it would have been better to have a twin layer shell/softer compound piece of armour.

I used the Dianese armour for ages, very pleased with it, saved me from more than one major get off. Denise uses it now without the back protector for trials. I bought an Alpinestar version, which is good, but not quite as good as the Dianese. :blast
As an aside, I tried a Forcefield armoured shirt for mountain biking and trials, but found that the shoulder pads moved around too much for the money, instead got a 661 long sleeved compression shirt with armoured elbows and shoulders for about 60 quid.
Degrees of protection, its a comprimise, but a little is better than none! :thumb

Exactly what i did when i thought i'd better do something about the Osteoporosis.
I now wear a MX armoured string vest jacket thing everytime i get on the Bike.
snug, adjustable in every direction. Hard outer shell, soft inner padding. CE approved (fwiw).
All areas covered including chest. Added what's basically a Kidney Belt with velcro to it, to give double cover and support on my weakest point; L4 vertabrae. All this - supervised by my Physio.
A work jacket with loose body and baggy sleeves on top - and that's it.
Actually never been more cosy. It works. :thumb2

String vest type armour seems best if you're planning a visit to hit climes. Elbows, shoulders, back and breastplates can all be protected by some of the best kit.
Alpinestar Bionic is some of the best I have seen. Not the cheapest but the nmaterials use will have you covered for a long time after the initial investment.
The bionic kit is also available in female stylee, labelled Stella Bionic, which has breast protectors moulded to suit a pair of knockers.

I have this jacket:

Really well vented, good adjustment range and very substantial feeling - never had to test it in anger, but was happy wearing it down through Morocco in temps up to 36c.

For knee protection I wear these:

Which are pretty expensive, but my I have the knees of a lady M'Lord and they're VERY tough. Stick the brace into the top of your boots and they'll take your body weight straight from your thigh to the boot, pretty much bypassing your knee...

ps. They aren't my legs.

I have one but the breast protectors are not in line with my boobs - I think they're more suited for ladies of smaller proportions :augie
and probably a lot younger than me too :comfort
