hi guys i spilt a bit of superglue on painted plastic, has anyone got any tips on how to get it of without damaging the paint work.
cheers

I doubt it's possible :(

a razor blade held as flush with the plastic may get close, but I suspect you're going to have to damage the plastic to remove the glue then re-paint it.....Superglue is cyanoacrylate and I'm pretty sure it melts the plastic and forms molecular bonds with it :comfort

I once super glued my eyes together and was taken to hospital in an ambulance .... :D

You can get stuff to dissolve superglue.

Yes.

Acetone.

Acetone also dissolves some types of 'plastic' and paints

It doesn't dissolve or affect the sort of plastic that models are made of, (Airfix, not silicone bewbies ) but whether it works or not on this particular piece of bike plastic is open to guesses.

Try acetone (nail varnish remover) on the back of the bit of plastic first.....if it's all ok after 24 hours, give it a go.....or the very edge if the back isn't painted :thumb

This is a fair assessment of your situation, there is a tool known as a de nibber which if the glue has fallen onto a flat surface and you have a steady hand might help.

This is a cheap one, a good quality one would cost about the same as a repaint.

Might be worth popping into some local bodyshops to see if they have one.

There were a whole spate of muggings in Sarf Lahdon a few years back.....oiks would glue people's hands to the walls of a lift then strip them and leave them naked, riding up and down all day until someone found them :D

Not funny, sorry :(

:D

My tube blew up in my face !

It was in the early days and this was a sort of plastic cartridge with wings either side that you squeezed. Squeezing hard, nout was coming out, I thought it was almost empty. So I gave it one last big push expecting a dribble to come out. It was actually full up but blocked :blast

Bang !! The whole lot burst into my face and of course my natural reaction was to blink and shut my eyes. That was it ... :D Eyes (actually, eye lashes thank gawd) all stuck together!!

Boy did I feel a plumb :D

Warm soapy water to soak, then rub with sugar whilst still wet, repeat as required.

Sugar is softer then your plastic so shouldn't leave a mark.

That's weird as I've just bought soem Loctite Superglue and it says on the packaging "Water Resistant" :D

Normal cyanoacrylate isn't water resistant, but there are various ones with addatives that are. So yer bog standard cheap ass card of twenty tubes from the pound shop will came off with soaking, whereas the stuff I used to use for safety seals and cost a small fortune won't

A good hobby shop should stock super glue dissolver or remover. It is used to debond bits of the model that has been badly stuck together or your fingers. Take care a it causes a chemical reaction that heats things up but would not melt plastic.

I got superglue on my 800 gs tank cover once. Folded a peice of kitchen roll up. Wetted it and placed it over the glue overnight. Also put a lump ofvwet sponge on top to stop it drying out.
24 hrs later i just peeled it off. No damage at all. It did melt into my screen once. No chance of getting that off. Depends on the plastic.

I dont use the stuff anymore.

I've done that, when at work i was working under something and glue dripped off a component that someone had just applied too much and it dripped into my eyes, one visit to A&E where they cut my eye lashes off.. I may have looked a tw4t but was very lucky .
