Anybody else have a hole in their 2014 GS Crankcase like this?

Had my new 2014 GS a few months now, and this morning noticed a hole in the crankcase. It's on the left hand side of the bike (as you sit on it) where the leading edge of the left hand cylinder enters the crankcase. Its about the width of a pencil. There is no 'bung' or mesh in it -just a hole that appears to go through to the crankcase.
I only noticed it as there was a 'misting' of oil leading from it and over the left hand cylinder.
Anybody else have one of these? If so, should there be a bung in it? Any idea what it is for?

Thank-you for your help!

Yes, and on 2013s too. It's fine. Get dealer to check if you think you are losing significant levels of oil. Mine doesn't leak.

Its for the coolant to be spat out from when the seal on the pump is leaking. Dont ask me how i know. :-)

Thanks for your replies - it prompted me to take a closer look.

Took the bike out for a 30 minute ride. On my return had a nice stream of blue coloured water coming from the hole. Collant level is just above minimum. Bike has done 800 miles. I think I may need to call the dealer on Monday.... Raising this query on here this morning has possibly prevented an over-heating surprise at some point down the line. Thank-you!

Yep your water pump seal is leaking.
I had the same blue stain on mine resulting in a new water pump being fitted.

Mines only done about 800 miles as well.

Am off to Spain on it next week and no replacement pump in stock for a few more weeks. Will just keep an eye on the coolant level/engine temp and top up if required. Some on here have posted that sometimes the leakage stops perhaps due to black magic or the pump sealing itself. :nenau :thumb

I thought it was just a hole to let all the pieces of broken camchain fall out ;-)

Update...

Good news all round. :)

Just had a cracking ride down to the Bardenas Desert in Spain on the LC and after 2000 miles my coolant blowhole has dried up. Coolant level has remained between the two markers.

Presume the leaking water pump seal has fixed itself. :nenau

I knew it was worrying you, so whilst you where asleep, I pushed some sand in the hole..... Glad it's holding up !

That's great news and glad you had a good trip. Mine is booked into the dealers for early October....BUT......the flow has got a lot less, so am hoping it will sort itself out after a few more miles are put on it.

Hi all, just read thread. Mines leeking too. 13 plate 10k miles but not by me, I've had bike a month from BMW Wollaston. I'm now worried I've a blown pump seal. My nearest dealer "piddocks" is about 40 mile away. Will it be ok to ride there or does it need collecting. I've been told there should be a sponge in the hole!

Help, Gazza.

Just keep an eye on the level in the tank and ride it, yes there should be a sponge in the hole but I think they get blown out

Mine has been dribbling for ages, more water leaks out when it's driven hard but it's not really enough to bother changing the pump yet. I have had to top up the reservoir once and the leak seems to be getting less often and less coolant coming out when it does happen. There does seem to be a bit of foam a long way down the hole, can't see it but can feel it with a long thin screwdriver. Have done a few thousand miles since I first noticed it so it's hardly an emergency issue, well not yet anyway.
