just asking ,as its one of the very few trail /adventure bikes i havent owned ,but would definatley like to at some stage its just letting go of that bmw badge i find hard .

If anything I have found my S10 to be better each time I use it. It just gets on with it all without fuss or drama.

Not sure if it is love, but I find it just as rewarding to ride as my 1200GS. Badge was not part off my decision making process, so can't advise there.

It's all about opinions and dealers earn a living by pandering to our fickle nature as the grass is always greener etc.

Personally I had a 4 hour demo ride on the new LC GS, and I prefer my S10. I will be leaving for Greece on Saturday on my Yamaha leaving my GS1150 and 1200 Twin Cam in the garage.

No.

I am really enjoying the bike, 13 months after purchase.

I can't wait to get to the Tarn & Ardeche Gorges next month.

its on my to have list at some time for sure,i love the looks of theses bikes ,and as shallow as it is i couldnt buy a bike i didnt like the look of no matter how reliable it was

No ! Def not. Had one of the first new generation 1200 GSA's in the UK, a 2006 model and loved it for the 4 years I had it and was awesome and extremely capable, even off road. However, the S-10 is different and has other " charms" to it. See this discussion on the character of the S-10

Different stroke for different folks....like apple products

Love mine to bits. It's one of those bikes that grows on you the more you use it. No fuss, no bother, takes all you throw at it in an extremely competent way.

S10

I've not got the same affinity i had with my 1150 adv but every time I ride it I love it. It's a great bike, does everything really well but I dont have the same affection for it as my GS. Probably because apart from the spokes corroding it's faultless and i like to tinker with my bikes, with the s10 there is no need to do anything except ride it. Try one, the press seem to insinuate it is characterless which it is'nt. The motor is fantastic, it's the most stable handling bike i've had and the build quality is good, though not great in my opinion. The 6k service cost me £300 including a new rear tyre which was £100 cheaper than my GS when i got it serviced at a dealer. The build quality issues i have are only the finish on the fasteners really, which is cheap to rectify if you are concerned about that sort of thing.

i never listen to the pressthere only interested in how fast things go ,can you get your knee down etc ,they never look at the whole picture.
i am infact a member of the supertenere forum and its great so it is on my list for sure .

with the s10 there is no need to do anything except ride it................. The motor is fantastic............

You can tinker, an ECU Flash really perks up the throttle response and turns it into an utter torque monster with by far the best low down shove of any bike I have ever ridden.

I have also fitted a Wilburs Shock and had the forks re-worked with Linear Springs, the front end now feels far more compliant with a lot more feedback making that great handling even better. The shock has also massively improved the two-up handling and stopped the bike decking out so easily.

De-Catted headers will add a good dollop of top end if you want to chase sportsbikes down B-Roads, or keep up with Twin Cam GS' in a straight line burnup.

I liked mine from day one, it certainly feels solid and rides well out of the box, with the mods I have done (pretty much the same as I did to the GS) I now love it, just such a great do everything bike.

Of course I fancy the new KTM, and I loved my mates Explorer when I rode it, and if I had won that £80M jackpot I would certainly be buying the latest and greatest.

On my real world budget this bike does everything so well, and I really do not need more power, or more electronics or to have the latest bike to show off at the pub - because I am too busy riding the thing.

i have thought of selling mine recently because that's just the way i am :D
if i get bored or fed up (not necessarily with the bike) i start looking at changing but i have looked at all of the current crop and nothing i see could do the job better than what i have. 18 months in and i still have it so its a record breaker :thumb. The new KTM looks interesting but :nenau my S10 does everything and i just know i can jump on it and go anywhere in the knowledge it will get there and back with no fuss while enjoying every minute :clap

Me and my GSA did a lot of miles together and I loved that bike but cost and the continual failing of expensive parts gave me no choice but to get rid.
I got a cracking deal from Yamaha on an ex sales demo fleet S10 and never quite felt the same bond until recently when I have been doing much more camping trips away and doing a few mods but it doesn't really need much doing to it.
I love it, the engine, the handling and the reliability.... Just waiting for my custom built seat from Sargent Seats to arrive, fit my bar risers and TT adjustable screen mount and I think that'll be job done. :thumb2

I think that sums the bike up really well. It is great from the get go,you can play and add bits like we are all inclined to do. I had an XT660R before (in addition to my 1100) and it was so good and reliable I just felt that buying the 1200 was a sensible move. I did 17,000 miles in 8 weeks on my 660 with just tyres, oil/filter and a chain (and lots of petrol). I hope and believe the 1200 should be as good. 3000 miles so far and still very happy.

I think the best compliment I can give it is that it is as good as my 1100GS.

Off on a trip on my SuperTen next month, can't wait.

I do find it really odd that nearly all of the many "comparison" adv bike tests over the last couple of years exclude the S10 :nenau.

The comic has done one on every recent launch of a new "adv" bike but never includes the S10, have Yamaha upset the media ?

Sport and leisure say its the best for commuting :augie and last year i thin either the comic or BIKE continuously jumped one (without a bashplate) and cracked the sump on a rock so was excluded from the rest of the test.

to find a decent test you have to go onto a US/SA or Aussie site

Reviews have never been great as the bikes main virtues are not immediatte and obvious, on the initial launch the press slagged it off because it was not faster / lighter / quicker steering than the GS and did not have an electronic suspension option.

I would agree it was not necessarily any better than the 2010 GS, but was pretty much in the same ballpark - which is not a bad place to be, the Twin Cam GS is a fantastic machine, but just because it was no better in magazine reviewer terms it is therefore shite.

Now most the competition have gone chasing superbike BHP, fitted wider tyres for better track performance and offer even more far from essential electro-widgets the S10 is in a category of one.

It has the same sort of power as a ZX7R, which when I was growing up was a WSB contender, but somehow that is nowhere near enough for a bike designed to do pretty much everything except go fast or win races, nor is the @130mph top end as according to the press the bike is slow.

Many people have switched from 1150 and 1200 GS models and really like it, and pretty much every owner rates it very highly and all seem to agree the longer yo u own it, the more you like it.

A few have past 50k now and there is one floating about somewhere that passed 75k, and to date no major issues or common failures, many more are in the 20k-50k zone.

It has missed the opportunity to sell in numbers, but the only way it could have done that is if at first launch the press declared the GS dead and the Yamaha the new king and got the Charlie McWanbees to rush out and trade in their GSA's.

I can see it plugging away for years much like the FJR1300 which has always sold steadily, is loved by owners and universally slated by the press.

There are just far too many bikes in this market now, and in Sportsbike Britain the faster bikes will have more appeal.

I still think Yamaha should just sit back rather than spend a fortune on R&D, just update the bike a little and knock £2k off the list price.

They can sell them for thousands less than a GS in the USA and other countries - which is probably why they also seem to sell better abroad, and nobody ever pays full whack over here, nearly every owner I have come across has bought the bike as an Ex-Demo or Pre-Reg.

Dunno about fallen out of love with an S10, cant even fall IN love with one. cant find any bugger who's got one for a wee bit of an extended test ride. Apart from one dealer just outside london who decided he can hire me a bike for 24 hours for, ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY QUID.

Maybe Bahnstormer tipped them off:augie

One thing BMW do very well is demo bikes, no other manufacturer comes close, I have had to buy several new bikes without a test ride, although as I have got older and wiser refuse to do so these days.

Still I think asking for a 3 day test ride would be asking a bit much even from our friends at BMW.

IMO a test ride will never be enough to tell you much, maybe if your gonna hate a bike, but not if your gonna love it, that takes far longer.

On quick / test rides I liked the Ducati MTS / BMW GS and GSA / Super Tenere / Stelvio / Explorer - but given a few months of ownership and maybe a 3,000 mile tour and who knows :nenau

The only one I knew I would not want to own was the Honda as I did not like the riding position, and I preferred the GS to the GSA when riding them back to back.

I haven't bought a bike without a demo ride for decades, until the S10 last year.

However, when I sat on one at the NEC it just seemed to be a comfortable fit ergonomically. I knew the engine would be excellent as I had owned a TDM850 and the S10 would be very similar with added oomph.

Then I saw my bike in SW Superbikes, in black and I had to own it. Sometimes, you just know a bike will be right.
