Have been told the 2016 bars don't fit with head protector on, but that 2017 designed bars might.

Anyone tried it?

I know Xheafs etc will fit but I don't want to change my BMW protectors.

Thanks
Glenn

The BMW OEM bars are not the best. From previous experience if the bike goes over they push into the head covers. I've fitted SW Motec bars as they allow servicing without removal.

from the dark side this was sent

I have a GS TE made in Sept 2016 and have both OEM bars and covers. Speak to Ross at Welwyn BMW. It was to do with supercceded pary numbers on the system. Sorry away till Monday and will post pic then

Apologies just checked with my dealer. The bars are for the new 2017 version which now do fit. So no help to you
Sorry
Mike

Hi Mike, so you have 2017 OEM bars on 2016 TE with OEM head over? If so that is exactly what I'm trying to do. Let me know. Or do you have a 2017 model TE with 2017 bars. and the mounting points have changed?

Thanks
Glenn

I'm led to believe that you can't use the genuine BMW head protectors and bars at the same time on 2016 bikes. I went for the machineart head covers with the genuine BMW bars which fit together just great. The machineart covers look nice on the TB as well (I have a 2016 tb).

Quite possible, but when I test rode the 2017 TB and asked about changing to the new bike, it was pointed out that I could swap all my accessories over except for my 2016 engine bars as they don't fit?
(As it happens the test ride showed only marginal improvements to selecting first, so I'm sticking with the quicker 2016 bike :-))

OEM bars fitted with the OEM head protectors.
There is very slight contact of the rubber guard of the crash bar with the upper edge of the valve cover protector but hardly anything but you can also slightly trim the rubber guard if needed.

Good to know you have a good one, my gear change is smooth as butter now, hence much faster than a 2016 :)

I don't know about a good one, it's just had a new water pump and start switch! Gears all good though apart from an audible clunk into first when hot. You need to ditch the 2017 emission stuff before it will match a 2016 though ;)

Cheers Glen. That'll do for me and a slight mod on the rubber guard is easy enough.

Had to have a new water pump on my 2016 TB and was loaned a 2017 TE whilst I waited. I can definitely say the 2017 gearbox was smoother but the engine was nowhere near as perky.

Hi Glenn
Mine was made sept 2016 and has Eu 4 stuff and classed as 2017 model. It has the oem bars ordered in sept and covers so 17 for both. I know before 2017 bars part number was on system they tried the 16 bars and they didn't fit. Their was a gap of about 2.5 mm in fitting.

Mine is a 16 plate and I was told there was more gap on 2017 bars which might fit over the OEM head protector. According to Glen above he has done just that.

As promised - looks like same as Glens. Apologies of opening an old thread
