Anyone done this!!

Been told it may make the bike backfire a bit, so if so how can that be stopped.

By not doing it in the first place..................

^

So, that mod you talking about there will make your bike sound nicer and arguably add a few bhps. Or not. More likely it'll just shift the 'power band' (if thats what you'd call it!) slightly further up the rev-range. At least thats been my experience of messing about with different exhaust configs on mine, although butchering the standard can is pretty much the only exhaust mod I haven't tried yet! The back-firing is generally thought to be the result of a poor seal between the standard can and an aftermarket y-piece and/or bad fitting between standard headers and aftermarket y-piece. If you do that particular mod and keep your cat, you may find less backfiring than if you go down the y-piece route, I don't really know. I've never been able to elimate backfiring completely despite trying many, many times! Keeping the bike in balanced and good tune seems to be the best way of keeping it to a minimum.

Also, if you do attempt this mod - do a search on 'cat code plug' and get ready for some reading :D

Do it and let us know how you get on :thumb

Geoff Deacon has a silencer thats been modified this way. He said it sounded awfull so he bought another pipe. Probably worth getting in touch with him before you try it.

Just take the can off and run the bike with just the cat and maybe a tailpipe from halfords to finish it off and stop the rain going in. Gorgeous sound, apparently road legal and costs nothing. At least try it - if you don't like it then put the can back on. There is a thread on here somehwere about it.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz !

Why do people bother

I've just put a Y piece and Remus Revolution silencer on my 99 GS1150. I unfortunately got over zealous with my polishing tool on the standard can and wore out the chrome! Mine backfires ever so occasionally but it seems to have sorted out a slight flat spot at 2100 revs. It also picks up better a low revs so less gear changing if you want to be lazy.

Also forgot to tell you. Get the BMW part that fits onto the inside of the left hand pannier to stop it burning a hole in it otherwise it'll end up like the one on the website you've put the link to. It's about a tenner.

As above, can off, add summat to stop rain going in. Enjoy fruity sound and lack of backfire on the overun. Remember to put can back on before going fording :thumb

When I had a vfr I messed around with various setups and when I sold the bike I put it back to standard and could not believe how sweet it ran.

For that reason I have not messed with the standard setup on my GS nor will I on my new ADV.

BWM spend millions developing the right exhaust for the bike. I have no lean running, no backfiring, no surging. All the things that so many people who "tinker" seem to have trouble with.

I have read hundreds of pages of info on "Y-Piece" etc and although I have one (sitting in cupboard) I see so many people revert back to the standard setting.

Any mods made to exhaust, fueling etc needs to be backed up with an expensive chip and fuel optimiser.... Power Commander and the likes. Then you need to get the bike Dyno'd and even if its sucsessfull the power gains are so marginal it hardly seems worth the bother.

Yes I know a y-piece and remus may sound nice but again thats personal.
I would suggest that anyone who "tinkers" with the stock setup should do a search on "y-piece" and Surging and backfiring and sit back for a week and be prepared to go blind and confused.

I did :D but the blindness is a different story :o

My personal view by the way :thumb

When I asked about this mod on another forum, I got this response:

Keith (hondapotamus) is a friend of mine. I have heard this mod. He later gutted the catalytic converter and found the combination to be too loud because much of the muffling is indeed from the converter. He is now running a stock muffler with a gutted converter. Lots o people are satisfied with a straight pipe attached to the stock converter. After trying the following and finding them ALL too loud I went back to stock cat plus stock can:

1) Remus Y-pipe + stock can
2) Remus Y-pipe + StainTune can
3) Staintune collector box + StainTune can
4) StainTune collector box + stock can

Those of you who want a noisy bike can have it. Not me. - Lee

I have to agree with Steptoe on this one too....

well had some time on my hands, and it was raining so what the f**k i will give it a go.
striped it down, done what it said, and rebuild, replace, fired it up and ....................sh*t...............
So, took it apart again, built my own baffel, packed it with exhulst packing from car put it back on, fired it up and ................sh*t...............
So now what i have done, and it sounds GREAT is to put ut back as it was to start with.
Now sounds like a BMW
So what have i learnt.........."if it works, dont try fixing it"

End of lesson

I saw the thread some time ago and converted mine after getting a remus titanium,, so did`nt need the O/E pipe,
I took the back fire plate out after it got stuck on the silencer,,got Bryn to try it and, what a racket,,
stripped it again and did the job as thread said and :nenau , I still put it on to try it,.
So any body wanting to have it?, come and try it for free,.
Also got a spare cat as well,.

Got a 12 ADV now , still std condition..
