whats the correct technique then silvermog? would be interested to know
I'm sure there are a few ... but ...
1. If down on the side away from the sidestand, pop out the stand ... it'll help catch the bike if this all goes wrong ...
2. Turn the front wheel *into* the ground, ie. on the ground side, pull the handlebar back to the tank, stick it in gear
3. Grasp the handlebar next to the tank
4. Grasp a solid convenient mounting point on the rear side of the bike nearest the ground ie. rear grab handle or pannier mount, etc
5. Plant your feet shoulder wide apart, bend the knees, crouch, straighten the back, keeping arms straight and loose, push up with the legs ... the important thing is that the legs do the 'lifting', they are the strongest muscles and designed for this type of stretch ... if you use your back/arms, you'll strain something ... hernias are free!!!
Ps. the difficult thing here is positioning your feet, so that you have room to lift the bike, without leaning into/away from the bike and getting in the way of the uprising bike!
6. When near upright, use more arm movement to start to balance the bike toward the vertical position
7. Take a moment to compose yourself with the bike balancing at vertical
8. If the sidestand is your side (ie. was under the bike), pop it out and relax
9. If the sidestand is opposite you (thats why you popped it out earlier!), gently lean the bike into the sidestand and relax
10. Alternatively, be a smartalec and balance the bike, walk around it, remount and rideoff as if none of this ever happened ...
11. Lick wounds (but not your back!!) and thank your lucky stars that you bought a bike which shrugs this off not a plastic pocket rocket that would now be scrap ...
HTH
BTW, do this at your own risk, but I've used it numerous times (offroad mostly I'll add!) with no ill effects.
I'm sure someone will be along soon to 'correct' this ...
Edit: OK, so it'll be me, after I wrote this I went looking and found this ...
