Anyone dropped a 1200 Adventure yet?

There were several ADVrider members who posted photos of their cracked engine bars not long after the Adventure model came out. A fellow calling himself "Turkish" was one of them - can't recall the others. Put his name in the search string and see for yourself. :dabone

Nobody's saying that some of the bars didn't crack at the engone casing end Andrew..it was a well reported fault, but down to the welding, not the design.

Like I said, I had mine replaced, and since then they've been well and truly tested.....and have stood up to it.....and look at the other pics in this thread :) :o

Don't stir it for the sake of stirring...they work, well IMO, and I'm glad I've got them :beerjug:

Ps. If you've never tried practising picking up a fully loaded bike, nip out and do it now ... knowing the right technique it was an absolute doddle to pick up, even tho its over 265kg wet fully fuelled ...

whats the correct technique then silvermog? would be interested to know

Anyone dropped it ??? - yeah :doh

Dropped the stealers demo bike - had just filled her to the brim, was on a slight incline & as I went to put on my lid she started to lean to the right  - as Silvermog says 'let it go' . There's no way I was gonna hold that baby :o

Only damage, other than my pride, was a slight scuff on engine bars & hand guard ;) Now that I've got that out of the way, hopefully I won't drop my own when it arrives :D :D

I'm sure there are a few ... but ...

1. If down on the side away from the sidestand, pop out the stand ... it'll help catch the bike if this all goes wrong ...

2. Turn the front wheel *into* the ground, ie. on the ground side, pull the handlebar back to the tank, stick it in gear

3. Grasp the handlebar next to the tank

4. Grasp a solid convenient mounting point on the rear side of the bike nearest the ground ie. rear grab handle or pannier mount, etc

5. Plant your feet shoulder wide apart, bend the knees, crouch, straighten the back, keeping arms straight and loose, push up with the legs ... the important thing is that the legs do the 'lifting', they are the strongest muscles and designed for this type of stretch ... if you use your back/arms, you'll strain something ... hernias are free!!!

Ps. the difficult thing here is positioning your feet, so that you have room to lift the bike, without leaning into/away from the bike and getting in the way of the uprising bike!

6. When near upright, use more arm movement to start to balance the bike toward the vertical position

7. Take a moment to compose yourself with the bike balancing at vertical

8. If the sidestand is your side (ie. was under the bike), pop it out and relax

9. If the sidestand is opposite you (thats why you popped it out earlier!), gently lean the bike into the sidestand and relax

10. Alternatively, be a smartalec and balance the bike, walk around it, remount and rideoff as if none of this ever happened ...

11. Lick wounds (but not your back!!) and thank your lucky stars that you bought a bike which shrugs this off not a plastic pocket rocket that would now be scrap ...

HTH

BTW, do this at your own risk, but I've used it numerous times (offroad mostly I'll add!) with no ill effects.

I'm sure someone will be along soon to 'correct' this ...

Edit: OK, so it'll be me, after I wrote this I went looking and found this ... http://www.pinkribbonrides.com/dropped.html ... nice writeup!

Eh! Yes this is mine 25-30mph, and yes the engine and tank bars done there job. Sub frame that holds the beak and oilcooler twisted, right hand crash bar bent back towards the lwr plastic tank.

But don't dare expect spare parts yet, been in the workshop for nearly 5 weeks now. I am now well enough to ride so I will be going to pick my bike up as it is still road worthy, and await the dealers phone call, to say they've got their act together, and got me the parts :spitfire

That looks nasty
must have happened not long after you picked the bike up
as i wondered why you hadn't posted a pic of the new machine

Good to hear your on the mend :thumb

6 days to be precise, this was to be the run that I did my first ride report on it. but as you can see it came to a bit of a miserable end. That's not me standin there by the way, it's my alter ego, Mr Adrenillin. Little did I know, I had 2 fractured vertabrae, a broken left thumb, and as off yesterdays hospital visit, I discovered I had 4 broken ribs not 2, and all this 170 miles from home. But once the mates got it out of the fence, I was determined to ride it home..Doh!
