Anyone for a spot of Dales riding?

I'm in Leeds so frequently avoid the areas you mention & I detest riding around Harrogate. Here's a few suggestions which don't leave you in traffic for too long but equally get you into the Dales in reasonable time.
Use the A168 which runs in parallel of the A1. Join it near Wetherby then exit at Boroughbridge/Ripon. There are other roads heading westwards too before & after B'bridge.
To reach Pateley Bridge, I'd take the Wetherby to Knaresborough road, then Nidd and Ripley and onto Pateley Bridge. Or, I'll go via Otley, Blubberhouses, Summer Bridge.

After Masham there's several roads to choose from to reach Hawes or completely avoid it!
Riding with folk who know the region will enrich your experience but failing that, get a decent map & follow the unclassified roads

Thanks Elle, thats really handy info. I've had a look at the forecast and doesn't look like there will be much doing this coming week, rain, rain and more rain, sadly.

She's right, but luckily I don't have that problem of avoiding those towns

I only have leathers at the moment. Tried it and the rain trickles off the tank down onto the seat and then through the vented area of my riding pants... basically a bizarre form of a bidet. It aint fun. I'll be getting touring gear eventually.

If you're on a budget or can't afford textiles, buy thin waterproof gear to go over the leathers. Should be able to get a jacket and trousers for £50 or less.
J&S sell a wide range of budget gear. I have a pair of army Gortex trousers that cost £15 from Johnson's of Leeds.
You will need them, after all, this is the UK....

Haven't forgotten about this, been a bit of a manic month. We're expecting in December and a lot of prep to do. On the plus side, finally got a satnav and textiles after I got in a sneaky few days away riding in mallorca on a gs650. I will try to arrange something soon. Due to the number of responses it seems like we would have quite a nice group eh?

If you find yourself at Leyburn then why not give Hawes a miss (unless you've run out of cheese) and come off the A684 and head towards Carlton, you'll be rewarded with some of the most beautiful scenery and a road that needs a little respect in places, it comes out round the back of Kettlewell, then take whichever back roads you fancy.

A few JB but i'm sure you'll know them.
The great thing about the Dales is you never tire of riding them, don't have to go arse up, it defeats the object, just a steady a pace and get lost in some of the beautiful scenery nature as to offer.
Theres a lot to be said for getting out there and getting lost especially on these roads and discovering roads you've never been on

Week days or weekends, depends on what shift I'm on.

When are the X Country boys going to get together for a short trip away for a couple of days. Mid week or weekends, depends on shift pattern.
Moffat or Hexham is my choice, but open to other.

Stayed at the Bucckeuch Arms at Moffat many times ... I book the place, the whole place, lock stock and barrel, for my Easter Tours
