What type of files are you trying to repair?

Are they already broken when sent or just when you receive them?

They were things emailed to me , pictures and forms ....

I think it asked for an XLS programme amoungst others ...

Every now and then it asks you to search the internet for a programme tp open random files .... :nenau

You might have some sort of virus that has arrived in an email, infected your machine and is now trying to sucker you into providing your credit card details.

Boot into safe mode, then run a tool like http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php to see what it finds.

xls is an excel file, do you have excel loaded on your machine? If you try to open a file type that is not registered then windows asks if you want to try and find the correct program on the net. Although I have to admit I've never tried opening an excel file on a machine without excel, I would have expected Windows to identify excel files properly even without it installed.

If you don't have excel, and don't want to buy it, open office will open excel files and is free.
