Has anyone fitted Hyperpro suspension units to a 1200 and if so what did you think?

Walter Colebatch had it on his 650 X Challenge when he did his Sibersky Extreme adventure and gave it a lot of punishment without any problems I think, so maybe that's some recommendation!

Hi,

I have lowered Hyperpro springs fitted to my '06 GS and after 3000 miles have had no issues but these have been on tarmac. I also fitted lowered Hyperpro to my g/fs Yamaha XJ6S without any issues.

The springs on my GS coped well on a trip to South France this in April when the bike was fully loaded with panniers, top box AND girlfriends make up bag!!!

I have not noticed any bad handling and am very happy with them.

Doddle to fit too. Motorworks sell them and can supply a spring compression tool for easy removal/installation. I think they charge £70 for the tool but will give you £60 back if you choose to return it after you have fitted you springs. Good service which I forgot to make use off :blast

Run Hyperpro on my R1100s for the past 6 years. Only issues I have had is that the paint on the springs is not that robust; should have used ACF50 earlier in the bikes life.

Rear shock has developed a slight fluid leak after about 30k. However I was able to get it serviced & rebuilt at the Hyperpro factory in Holland and they replaced the rear spring as well. A not unreasonable £190 including carriage.

I fitted Hyperpro 40mm lowering springs on my GSA with ESA. After about 300 miles I returned it to standard. There wasn't much difference in handling to standard from what I could tell.

If anyone wants a set of 40mm lowering springs for a GSA with ESA, drop me a PM.

hyperpro

Hi Duncan,
Had the 30mm lower springs fitted a couple of years ago now and may be the ride is a little firmer, handles very well but of course without swaping bikes with non hyperpro hard to tell differance.
not convinced its over a inch lower though.

Hyperpro is good stuff and I've used there progressive springs on both my 1100 and 1200 in the past. Not had the whole suspension units but no reason why they shouldn't be as good as anything else.

I've got Ohlins units on my 1200 at the moment and did consider Hyperpro but they wouldn't come up with a decent deal:augie

Thanks for your replies, I'm a little surprised that no-one seems to have a set of complete suspension units fitted.

I'm just trying to do a bit of research to see if there's anything more cost effective than Ohlins or Wilburs.

Tsiklonaut of this parish (Margus and his wife Karina) rode an 1100 around the world for 3 years, blogging as they went (check out the trips section of this forum) and they had no end of grief with suspension units of various brands. They ended up with hyperpro and rated it highly. Here's a post from ADVrider about them

Like a lot of people I've been vexed by the choice of Ohlins vs Wilburs vs Hyper Pros as replacement shocks for my '02 GSA. There are millions of threads out there comparing them but that's the thread that sold me on Hyperpro. I'm pricing them now to install them before the coming season.

Had Hyperpro units on my 1200 for about 18 months now, excellent!

Another reincarnated thread :)

The Hyper-pro units have a bigger diameter shaft than either the Ohlins or the Wilbers units. It would appear that this makes them more robust and solves some of the issues that travellers seem to have with the others when heavily loaded on rough roads.

Hyper Pro is what will go on my new bike should it seem to require an upgrade.

I'm running hyperpro's. Basic sets (preload + rebound).

The difference with stock setup is huge, but the original suspension was a lot softer. So, if you go over speedbumps, it will be less comfortable in my opinion. Smaller bumps in the road are handled much better by the hyperpro's and the bike is much more stable overall, which in my opinion also adds to comfort.

BMW North Oxford fit Hyperpro to customer bikes as the factory is only just down the road. I'm personally more likely to fit Wilbers because Revs Racing the importers are not far from me.

I have a GSA with the usual ESA adjustments. I believe Wilbers can be fitted for around £1300 at Revs Racing. Is there any way to rebuild my OEM units with Hyperpro springs for example, or do I have to get a complete kit? I would like to keep the ESA functions and I know that the Wilbers kit would work fine, but I am not sure if rebuilding the stock shocks is a good and cost effective option?
I never take the bike off road, if that makes any difference...

The shocks can be rebuilt. by people such as these (via google)
http://firefoxracing.co.uk/rear-shock-servicing/
http://www.themotorbikerepair.co.uk/suspension/liverpool/liverpool/
http://www.ftrsuspension.co.uk/

They drill the shock case to vent the Nitrogen and strip the shock. A gas valve is fitted to the drilled hole, parts replaced, assembled and finally it's re-gassed. They have to remove the spring so just supply a replacement with the shock or maybe take their advice. An ESA shock needs more stripping down, but the actual shock absorber is much the same as a non ESA unit.

Revs Racing/Wilbers will tell you its not possible, but they mean they dont service OEM shocks. To be fair they are not in that market so why would they.
