I'm in the process of running in my new GS TE which is a 2017 model with all the latest gearbox improvements. I had been very impressed with the gearbox so far, but had a couple of worrying glitches while out yesterday, and wondered if anyone else has had anything similar.

On a couple of occasions when starting off, a downward prod of the lever failed to take the bike out of neutral and into first. There was no resistance, and no click or clunk, it just didn't go into gear. After repeated attempts it did eventually select first. This happened a couple of times, and then when I got home and pulled onto the drive in 1st and stopped, I struggled to get it into N. It kept going from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 1st but wouldn't drop into neutral. Eventually I found that by barely touching the gear lever and putting no pressure on it at all it finally went into N. It all seems to be normal again today.

Any thoughts on this?

Fred

I've had trouble finding neutral but as my last bike was a Multistrada I thought that was normal.
I don't find it any worse that any other bike i have had in the last 10 yrs but as they have all been Italian that's not much to go on.
I've had a couple of issues with the quickshift pro not selecting gear, but that is definitely me. I haven't been letting the lever return fully and keeping a bit of upward pressure on it so the next time i go to change its a bit like hitting false neutral, Just like the multistrada although that was not me, that was the bike.
Haven't used the a quickshift before just need to get use to it I guess.

Let it run in irst. Takes a while to bed gearbox in

Yes, unless it gets a lot worse and starts happening all the time I'm not intending to do anything about it before the first service, when I will mention it to the dealer. I did adjust the shift lever today as I found it was a bit too low.

I've had minor gearbox issues with most bikes - the most common being when having to stop quickly without time to shift down through the gears, when I've often found that it is sometimes not possible to change all the way down to 1st just with the shift lever. In those cases I've always found that just slightly engaging the clutch while holding the bike on the brake is enough to get the next gear to slot in, and is probably just something to do with how sequential gearboxes work. I've also had occasional problems selecting neutral on other bikes, but can't recall ever not being able to select first, so that is a little more worrying if it keeps happening.

yes I also have had problems, mine is a week old with 400mls on it, running in so taking it steady and I find it doesn't want to go into neutral and also when I'm using the gear shift pro its very clunky and doesn't always go in right and the bike jumps or goes into a false neutral

also find that shifting down is a pain as it doesn't always want to go down a gear, my old 2016 model was 100% better than my new crap and I used that bike and rode it quick, I am also going to mention it as its done it from brand new

also I have noticed that the gear indicator on the dash doesn't always show up and just stays blank

That doesn't sound great - particularly the gear indicator going missing. Must check that on mine.

Other than the issues I mentioned the gear changes on mine have been very nice, particularly down changes if I blip the throttle. I haven't used the quickshifter much, but found you definitely have to have a fully closed throttle for downshifts to work properly, and you seem to need to be fairly hard on the throttle for upshifts, otherwise they are very clunky.

Mines a March 2017 GSA TB and no issues so far.

Down shifting likes to be around 3000-3500 rpm on mine. Upshifting works spot on.

I'm used to quickshifters though, they like high revs and engine load.

Not had any neutral issues or gear indicator issues so far.

Mine has now done 1000 miles , gear change better than the 15 but still a bit notchy , also notices the clutch was grabby on the last bit of the lever.
Mentioned to BM and they have suggested may be an issue with the clutch , ie an airlock or stiff operating piston. Its going in on thursday so ill let you know.
I changed due to a replacement bike as my 15 plate had two engines and the final straw was cam failure , just incase some mentions that I change a bit often ( was not my choice)

Bought mine in October and now at almost 4,500 miles.

The gear indicator can get confused at times and slowly letting out the clutch till it bites soon resolves this. Happens sometimes on fairly harsh stops.

Neutral can be hard to find at times and also can hit a few false neutrals from time to time.

Doesn't really bother me much but will mention it at the next service.

I've got a GSA TE and have only ever had a few times when it didn't want to go into neutral choosing instead to keep going straight past N to 1st then straight up into 2nd. On those occasions just bringing in the clutch a little then pulling it back on resolved the problem. I also had the same issue on the demo bike I tried, so I expect its a "Oh they all do that Sir" problem and nothing to worry about. The quick shifter I never use below 3rd gear and it seems to like shifting a lot better when "giving it some!" :D

Rightly or wrongly, I may use the shifter up through the box if making progress :) but usually the clutch coming down again.

2017 GSA gearbox spot on till 700ml service now it is taking 5-10 attempts to get neutral. will see how it goes !

Sounds very clutch to me .

If it was obstructive and crunching when trying to get into neutral, which I have had on some bikes, I would agree, but at least with my GS that isn't the case. In fact when it did this it seemed to have gotten into a state whereby it was far TOO easy to go from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 1st, and so seemed to be bypassing neutral. With the clutch held in, there was no feeling of engaging the neutral position, and I only got it to go into N by barely touching the lever when in 2nd - any more pressure than that and it dropped straight into 1st. As I was stationary I couldn't try it without the clutch. If it happens again I will try letting the clutch just start to bite to see if transferring a little motion into the gearbox will help.

I know they are supposed to have modded the gearbox to make gear selection easier, but this is ridiculous!

to be honest my clutch doesn't feel as smooth as my 2016 model either, I am going to get its first service on Friday so hopefully better after that and will post and let you all know .

New clutches use a 'run in oil' which is different to your first service oil. So clutch will get much better after 1st service, less grabby.

its not grabby, its like its not there, very light and no real feel to it like my old one

hopefully put another 100+ mls on her tomorrow to get ready for its 1st service
