Anyone have a City Select v8 CD

In NE Surrey / SW London area that I could borrow?

I ordered the upgrade from Garmin a couple of weeks back, nothings turned up yet and I'd like to be on version 8 when I travel down to Spain and back in a couple of weeks time.

I'm in Thames Ditton, near Esher & Surbiton. So if anyone has a v8 CD I could borrow for a few days just to do the update, it would be appreciated

Strangely enough I have a brand new V8. City Navigator disc sitting on table. Garmin sent me 2 by mistake...that's why there's a shortage

Den: I just bought a quest, so my understanding is that I'm eligble for an upgrade to the current version, and that the CD's themselves dont actually have an associated unlock code - its something that you'd get either with your unit, or purchase seperatly. I'm new to this lark, so i may be talking crap...

Cookiemonster. AFAIK City Select was discontinued, but if you are entitled to an upgrade, I'm pretty sure from reading other posts on here that you get the latest City Navigator instead. The second point to note, is that Version 8 of City Navigator is only available on a DVD (Not a CD) and if (like me) your computer doesn't have a DVD reader - your stuffed and it wont be any use to you.

Jon, sadly no, I do not own a GS. It was either that or an R1 - guess what's now on Fleabay....

You are welcome to the disc, but as others have pointed out, you will need an unlock code from the chappies at Garmin. I couldn't use my existing code to unlock the new disc. You have to pay a ransom, sorry 'unlock fee'!, either on the website or over the phone.

Taff is entirely correct in everything he says. However, if you don't have a DVD player, you're not totally stuffed - I am sure there is a 12 to 14 year old on your street that has an external DVD that he/she uses to play computer games, etc. - just borrow the thing for half an hour to install the software, then give it back to the kid. Once the disc has been read once and installed on the computer, you won't ever need the DVD player (or the disc) again.

One thing to be aware of with CN8, there are fewer map tiles which cover much larger areas and take up more memory than v7 therefore if the gps has a small memory you can not get so much of the areas you want to visit in it.

Also if you upgrade to CN8 before you use your second unit activation code you will not be able to use the version you upgraded from on the second unit which is not good if is a small memory gps like a legend or gpsmap 60 series.

No worries, I've got a dvd player (i tend to use "CD" as a generic term, probably something i should change).

Dave: its a Quest 1, so im hoping that although i cant all of europe in it at one time, it has enough for trips through france and spain, etc

My V8 disc just arrived and I live in Kingston-upon-Thames. Call the mobile if you want to come over and pick it up(assuming you'll drop it back). I don't have an unlock though for V8.
