I was wondering if it is possible to have a hand held CB radio connected to Autocom working effectively off a BMW R1200GS.

The reason I ask I am working on a project where I may have some other riders who have cb radios already fitted. I run Wintec with Autocom at present.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Nigel

you mean a (pmr) personal mobile radio?

there's vox and ptt units that fit onto autocom

my choice would be a ptt button (push to talk)

I have pmr, no issues, but I did some training with a rider on a Goldwing who had a CB radio and was wondering how to 'tap' into into his system. On the day he had one of my radios and ear speakers. Cb not used.

if they're quartzed the same then it's just a different version of bigger base station versus a hand held device.

We had a 4x4 with a specific CB in it and then went off and got programmable handsets to match.

but your skirting around the edges of needing a license for use and in europe... you can get massive fines for getting caught....:thumb2

????

27MHz 40 channel FM is a european standard that UK had to allow in the 80s

Hand held CB with standard mike speaker port just like pmr radios, you should be able to get some sort of hook up.

EDIT Car version with vox http://www.4x4cb.com/public/item.cfm?itemID=1960 just from a quick Google

I dont know about CB,but i use PMR radio myself. I power it from the accessory socket under the seat connect it through a Starcom digital system with PTT button and place it on the backseat
ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS. mind you i`m told that it "gets out" very well :thumb2 cant think why :augie
One of the most important things is to use a good quality radio.

Talk to Autocom about this (or Sam at Chainspeed). Most of the stories I've heard about CB and Autocom have been horror stories. The CB radio's emit huge amounts of RF which gets picked up as a buzzing interference by the Autocom cables.

Doesn`t happen with PMR and Starcom. I know of a person who has his PMR kicking out a massive 2 watts and it give no problems.

I have had mine transmitting 4w with out interference but at that power in close to other bikes you get a bit of distortion. My Wintec is used at 2w which appears to give a decent range.

Err , no they dont. 4Watts max power or 2 wats half power. Dont think thats massive, but I may be wrong.

My comment referred very specifically indeed to CB radios not PMR 446 or any other stuff in common use in the UK. Are you sure CB radios are OK with Autocoms?

John

you may also want to speak to a company called "ears" (in west london from memory...) we needed some interfaces making to allow me to speak from wired to telex to 2way and they looked puzzled and made all the cables while I waited.

near BBC white city...:thumb2

Your Coment referred specifically to CB radios, really, funny that so did mine. Say again 4 watts output power is not massive, but then Imay be wrong

I am pleased to hear that it is working for you. What brand of radio are you using as this would be helpful to the original poster?

Your initial thread concerned a Goldwing and a CB radio. If the CB is original equipment then it maybe an AM set up the same as the Harley's so unless you are running VHF/AM you will not be able to sink in. At one time these sets were illegal in this country but it's a long time since I was into CB so this may have changed

I've used amateur radio kit (2 watts output on 144MHz) via an Autocom on my 650 Dakar with no problems. I had to fabricate an interface cable to get the PTT to work. That's an oldish bike however, and with all the electrickery on a 1200 I suppose there's the possibility of the RF energy getting into the bike's inner workings.
