Anyone know anything about this?

Have a word with Richie. He was involved with the Salt racer at one point. I think he supplied another engine to another Australian who went on to set the speed record in his class.

I will, I have to speak to him anyway. Tried on Friday but he wasn't around.
(I'll have to have something to think about when this one's done!)

Had a word with Richie and very interesting it was too - on a couple of subjects. This one could turn into something.

Re these legendary final drives

The /5 and later, race only, 34/13, 1:2.615 ones, to be specific.

Do they actually exist?
Are there any in captivity or did BMW make three of them and keep them all to themselves?
If they do exist, what are the chances of finding one that hasn't been caned to the point of uselessness in said racing endeavours!
Has anyone ever seen one for sale?

Just curious...

Motobins had a few for sale years ago. I posted on Advrider and one of the Aussies bought them for his race bike.

Plenty of salt lakes here in South Australia.
Lake Gairdiner, where the annual speed week is held each Feb is probably the most reliable, weather / salt wise and has a decent sort of main straight.
Someone mentioned that the run off after the finish line is 165 km, which if true probably explains the lack on front brake on Adrian's bike.
Lake Eyre ,where Donald Campbell ran his Bluebird, and Lake Torrens are a decent bit larger, but a bit lower so fill up/soften easier.
None are close to any amenities, and everything has to be carted in, and out , on dirt/ sand tracks for the last couple of hundred km.

As far as I'm aware, we have two aircraft runways and a beach!

I'm not actually certain that we have access to both the runways anymore. I'm sure someone will correct me on that. It would take a decent lottery win for me to get a bike to Australia (which is a shame as I had the privilege of working there for a year and I loved it).

However, realistically, at Airhead speeds even our limited facilities should be enough. :D

I'm almost tempted to challenge you. I have a Moorespeed engine and a stripped down Twin Shock, unfortunately I haven't got the time to do it...Otherwise I'd have kicked your ass :D

Well you know how long my projects take, you could probably still get yours finished first - and then I know what I have to beat. We'd probably end up building identical bikes and the only real winner would be Richie :D

Can't quite let go of this idea...

Gentle but persistent research, and a bit of lateral thinking has me thinking that I know a way I could save a lot of money and still get a result. :green gri

Is it built yet? :D

Elvington is very near me so I can come and watch/cheer, bring hot tea and some spare airheads. It's very long and the surface is mostly still OK too. Noise NIMBYs have ruined it for club racing and F1 tests, but I think relatively silenced speed record stuff still happens there.

It may lack the glamour of actual Bonneville, but there's a good air museum and York's always nice (when above water). :D

Not quite!😂

Always fancied a trip to Elvington to watch a speed record meet. Maybe this year...
