I painted mine black along with the rear plastics.
Still gets scuffed but then easy to touch up as i know what colour it is

If you paint it use something for plastics.

I would use a flat black. I believe it should be the same colour as the frame which aluminium silver is a close match.

wonder if BMW car paint for wheels will be a match?

Have ordered some BMW Motorrad Aluminum Silver Met - 960 from E-bay... will see when it arrives ;)

When I had Suzuki DL1000 with silver rack, it got scuffed very quickly. What I've done was use paint thinner and rub it until all the paint was gone. It took few hours but it got completely black. Had to do it outside because of strong smell and wear gloves. One year later I polished it with polishing machine and it looked perfect. Hadn't have scuffs ever again.

interesting.. would be good to see pictures?

This the best of what I stll have on my computer. Only the part of rear rack is visible:

I faced a similar issue a few years back and I couldn't get a paint number from BMW as it's regarded as an 'accessory' rather than painted metal/frame/tank etc. If you did want to retain the silver finish then the best way would be to take it to a decent spray shop, for matching. They are of course black on some of the latest 1250s as well.

I guess BMW is going the same way Suzuki went in 2019 with their V-Strom. They both understood that silver rack was wrong. Suzuki even had a recall on the problem replacing scuffed silver racks with ones with thicker silver paint that would get scuffed again but just not that easily. So, new V-Strom 1050 now comes with black rear rack.
I'm waiting for my new R1250GS to arrive. It's Tripple Black and it comes with black rear rack.

Well, looks like the photo doesn't appear here
Let's try again:

that looks good. Why didn't you use paint stripper.. do you think it would damage the plastic surface?

I was afraid as I had some bad experiences in past when paint stripper simply melted some types of plastic. As I'm not an expert who can say the type of plastic by just looking at it, I went harder but safer way.
Ah, and my cheap medical gloves ruptured partly so the skin dried out so badly that later fell of from the areas touched by paint thinner.
I live and learn...
