Took the bike ('05 1200) for its MOT today. It passed ... which is nice.

On the way home, I stop and park up on a steep hill, facing down. I'm away from the bike for two or three minutes at the most. When I try to start it, the bike make one click and the display dies. Nothing happens. I switched the ignition off and tried again. Same again excepts the display doesn't always come up.

Since the hill was steep and long, I managed to bump start on the way down. The bike was fine on the way home with servo brakes and all electrics behaving properly. But as soon as I got home and switched off and back on again, I got the single click and a dead display / bike.

Before anyone says "it's the battery", it is a new one that was replaced about 3 weeks / 800 miles ago!

Any ideas ...

I've got the bike out of the bike and charging up on the Optimate. I don't, however, have a volt meter.

I'm afraid to say that this is the latest in an ever growing line of ever more frequent problems that I am experiencing with the bike. I've owned it since new - 5 years almost exactly - and have done 48k on it. It was fine for most of last year until the gearbox 'disappeared' in October. I've only just got it back on the road about 5 weeks ago!

Thanks

Kai

Loose connection between the starter and either the earth or the battery?

Mine did a similar thing and the main cable from the starter was a bit loose. Battery was only 2 weeks old, so it wasn't that. A quick tighten up and she was good to go again. (This was on my Rotax 650)

Always a good idea to apply Occam's Razor to these things, Kai - so I'd be looking for a loose connection first. Battery earth strap perhaps. I don't know where it connects to the engine/ frame and Dave's still got my Haynes from when he replaced your gearbox. He's away this weekend so I can't ask him.

I've also recently read of people having some trouble with their ignition switches. Maybe a squirt of contact cleaner down there would help.

You're welcome to borrow my multimeter if you need it.

"It's the battery"

After two hours on the Optimate (battery removed from bike), it has delivered the dreaded red light and 'weak' verdict.

Going to call the local Halfords to see if they can have a look at it and/or give me a replacement.

It never rains ...

Buy an odyssey battery an then forget about it,you'll never have a flat battery again:thumb

Well I'm hardly likely to buy 'another' battery. anyway, it's the right spec and a battery is a battery. Lets face it the OE battery lasted almost 5 years!

Anyway, I disconnected the Optimate and reconnected it and after a wee while it's now saying the battery is fine. so I'm wondering whether the MOT garage simply left the ignition on for too long and largely drained the battery.

I'll give it a go tomorrow to see how it works.

Kai
