Hi there,

I am soon to become the owner of a 2006 R1200S, 12000miles, good condition, ABS and standard suspension. I am also the owner of a 2009 R1200GSA.

Is there anything I need to look out for with the 1200S? is at similar to the GSA, ie suspension, engine, shaft drive.

Any comments welcome

Cheers

I have a R1200s with the full sport pack. Generally the same thing to look out for as any R1200. I haven't covered too many miles on mine - but the first owner had now issues, and its been completely reliable for my so far. Just make sure all age related servicing is up to date, brake fluids, abs system, alternator belt and anything else that is on the service schedules, with it being so low miles. Oh, and make sure you get the engine remap downloaded, if the previous owner didn't get the improved 2009/2010 version - which is worth a bit more bhp and better torque :)

Great bikes, and I wish my twin cam had such a nice engine - and it say it would be more than a match for the new LC.

Hi, is it the standard one or has it got the Ohlins and 6'' rear wheel. The 1200S is fairly bulletproof, some reported fueling problems and the accompanied vibration. If the bike had a hard life like regular abuse on a track (they still race them in Germany and Belgium) and the owner didn't look after the drive train then it would show up on the test ride. If the bike is in immaculate condition then not a lot to worry about. Just check the usual like HPI check and full service history. Akrapovic exhaust, panniers, aftermarket wheels, carbon fibre panels are all extra.

Its the standard suspension and rear wheel, hoping the suspension is ok, would have preferred the ohlins!
Looking forward the carving up a few corners, do like the boxer engines, never miss a beat!

The standard suspension is pretty good, and the Ohlins is not top f the line. So aftermarket Ohlins, or nitron etc, would probably be better than stock ohlins.

I also don't think the wider rear would make much difference; it's just a nice to have.

the ohlins get a good write up

are there any alternatives to full ohlins? upgrade existing? or change over?

how much of a budget do I need???

cheers

The standard Ohlins that is fitted as per sport package is a good basis to start with, the Showa units are not bad either. A decent set up for you and a service is all you need for riding on the road. I think you are looking in the £500 region maybe a bit more if the work is done by MCT. Don't be mistaken, even if it is the emulsion shock by Ohlins the suspension is far better than other OE fitted suspension. If you want to upgrade just have a look at what is fitted to the HP2 Sport. It is a couple of thousand pounds worth, so I would go the for a service and set up, or try to get the standard Ohlins suspension of Ebay. Much cheaper that way.

For after market suspension, if you really want to, have a look at WP, Wilbers, Nitron and Ohlins.
