The Triumph Adventurer 1200 is at the final prototype stage before testing and development phases are over and the bike goes to full production.
When MCN reader Ian Scott snapped the new 1200 inline three cylinder Triumph testing in France way back in 2009, it looked like the British firm has the massive-selling BMW R1200GS in its sights.
More recent information suggests the performance and power of the Triumph is going to be more of a rival for the 150bhp of the Ducati Multistrada 1200. Rumours suggest similar power for the Triumph with the most shocking news being that Triumph has decided to drop some power to make the bike even more useable.
BMW has for the past 30 years had the adventure bike market sewn up with little room for rivals. It now looks like the dominant BMW is going to have the hardest fight since the GS was born.
The Triumph Adventurer will have an inline three-cylinder motor with a capacity thought to be between 1150cc and 1180cc, according to insiders. It's estimated it will produce more than 140bhp, with lots of torque. Triumph has even gone to the trouble of designing a shaft-drive for this bike.
The image shows how the bike will look apart from colours and final trim. We also understand there will be a choice of front mudguards - a low one as pictured and a higher BMW GS-style 'beak'.

Looks crap. cast wheels. 140 BHP is too much for a serious dual sport...It'll be an expensive flop like the Yam 1200.
Give me a beak and spokey dokeys and I'll probably buy one 
The one I saw in Ronda back in June looked much nicer than that

Sound, so to make a GS beater..... you take a road bike, and, erm, put a large fuel tank on it and ,erm, yeah that's it..... feck off Triumph, that bike looks shit....... so it will sell loads and then they'll all be for sale again in 6 months when the phlop has flopped.

I spoke to a Triumph main dealer 3 months ago and they had seen the pics at the factory of the prototype. he desbribed it as a larger version of the 800 with spoked wheels and shaft drive plus a big tank.

The pic is of a prototype. The finished version will be offered in two versions as per the 800 Tiger (and GS) and spoke/cast wheels will be options. Triumphs record is good of late and they know this is one of the few healthy biking sectors (adventure bikes/tall rounders) so I very much doubt it will be a lemon when it is officially launched.

Hmmmm. If it sounds anything like the 800 version I defo wont even be road testing it. Is it just me that hates the sound of that triple - puts me in mind of a dentists drill/washing machine....yuk

It's am awesome engine. I had an early 900 Thunderbird with aftermarket pipes and it was superb. Unfortunately the finish on Trumpets has gone downhill since then

I know its a great engine, just hate the sound of it...
With the FD / FPC troubles you could easily argue the GS is still a lemon 7 years after the launch
That pre-production prototype does look a bit rough, but assuming the production model is a fair bit tidier I would consider one.
The Yamaha may have been a sales flop but it rides very nicely, just too pricey, with both the new Triumph and Honda's they need to get the pricing right.
I liked the Triumph 1050 lump in the Tiger very much, the engine is light years ahead of the GS, as is the VFR 1200 engine, 140BHP may be more than you need but you don't have to use it all the time.
I do not intend off-roading (well not on a GS sized bike anyway) and like 99% of owners just want a bike that can handle all types of roads, soak up potholes, carry two people in comfort and has decent luggage, as soon as someone comes up with a bike matching this criteria as well as the BMW then I will be reaching into my pockets.
If the Honda and Triumph are both poo I may still go for a bargain on an unwanted Yamaha.
Honda still looks favourite as it will most likely be better built, more reliable and cheaper to service than any of the others, 8k service intervals and £50 an hour labour rates - beats £350 a pop on the GS every 6k, and is bound sure to be less than the Triumph as well, plus my Honda dealer will provide an FOC courtesy bike.

No, just the sound of THAT 3 cylinder engine - its just something they have done with it,sounds too high pitched/whizzy/blender like to my ears.

Hi,Been watching for only a short while..ordered new GSA 1200 for Sept.
And already bored with Rasher and his continuing negative comments on BM's...if you're not happy with BMW..bugger off somewhere else.
