I took a test ride on an R nine T last week. Impressions:
1. It's a work of art - you could (or I could at least) put it in your lounge and stare at it. Not much plastic on it, and it appears to be made of top-notch components throughout.
2. For me, it's tiny (normal ride: XChallenge). That said I didn't find it uncomfortable (I've not had a road-only bike since about 1991), but apparently I looked too big for it (my height: 5' 11"). Maybe an optional tall seat would fix this.
3. It goes. Very well. I also expected a clunky gear change but it was very smooth.
4. Handling was pretty good - I was too scared to push things given it was raining and the bike wasn't mine.
5. It sounded amazing, even with the stock pipes. Not irritating, but how you'd expect a motorcycle to sound.
6. Only gripe - the rear mudguard didn't give too much protection so there was quite a lot of dirt thrown up onto the back of my jacket. That said the rain was coming down and we did take some country roads.
Would I buy one? If I could solve the height problem and had the money to spare, for sure. Even if it would be my only road bike.
Thanks to Cotswold BMW for lending me the bike and for the excellent customer service.
I did wonder if BMW would unveil a 650 equivalent. If not, then in the spirit of the new wave custom scene, I might just make my own....
