Hi, I'm here from the Advrider forum, I stumbled upon this thread after looking through the forums for some 2017 GS update info. Here is my story regarding the new yet to be announced GS.
I went to the local dealer early in September this year (this is in the EU) to inquire about possibly purchasing a GS1200 this year. The dealer told me that they had pretty much cleared their stock for this year and advised to hold off until later in the year as they said the an updated model will be announced for the year 2017. Now, I know that some markets technically already have the 2017 year bikes shipping and riding around, but keep in mind that different countries have different systems for designating year models, i.e some countries do that by calendar year, others by product year (august to august), others by ship and first registration date and so on.
Now I went to the dealer again two weeks ago to put my order down and they already offered me the new 2017 version of the bike that they say will start to be produced in November this year for delivery early 2017. They had literally just received the new colours and options from BMW HQ. So I went on and put down a deposit and signed a contract for a R1200GS NEW (that's what it says on the options list and invoice) that they promised to deliver on February 26, 2017. The colour specs and options packages for it were these:
As you can see here - these colours have not yet been officially announced. Also the options list can tell us something about what this update will have - Hill Start Control (previously found on their luxury tourer bikes) and ABS Pro is now standard on the base model, as is Dynamic Brake Light, whatever that means.
I asked them why BMW has updated the GSA for 2017 with minor changes in colour and EU4 regulations tinkering, but not the GS and they said that most likely people are still ordering the current GS model and they have to deliver those first. They themselves seem to be confused that some GS (not GSA) models that have arrived now are EU4 compliant, which means that they have EU4 emissions, a new dash and some improved transmission internals, but this they thought was due to some legal conundrum of having some 2016-built bikes needing to adhere to EU4 standards before they end up in the market. So in theory there is a 2016-build GS model version 2. Same model, same colours - EU4 compliant and designated "2017" in some markets. Regardless, the colour specs above are from an entirely different model. How different - that is just pure speculation at this point. All I know and all they know is the new colours and package options. That is all.
Also, they said the GSA update will follow late 2017 for delivery in 2018. As historically BMW has updated the GS first with GSA following a year later (this was the case in 2013 as well). Take what you will from this, but I'm pretty confident they are announcing an updated GS in Milan. Might not be a radical update, but definitely new colours, electonics plus the engine updates that were already announced in July - updated transmission, EU4 emissions, new dash, etc.
