Apparently BMW have stopped production, ready for an updated GS coming in 2017, so you won't get it until January 2017, according to someone on the AdvRider forum.

There are four new colours coming - Lupin Blue Metallic, Iced Chocolate Grey Metallic, Light White and all Black (at an extra 100 EUR). No more triple black option, along with an update to the bodywork, and several other other updates. It seems like an LCI update rather than a full blown new model, as the power/ weight is reported to be the same.

Announcement will be at the show in Milan.

Oooooooooooooh might be tempted to change next spring - will have to see what the detailed changes are:)

After visiting the factory in Berlin last week they certainly haven't & wouldn't stop production.
Stopped building the 2016 model & now building the 2017 model maybe..
( but would imagine they still have pre placed orders for 2016 models ).
They churn a bike out 2.5 minutes 24 hours a day Monday to Friday.
When you think how many countries take BMW bikes, they have to keep building bikes otherwise they fall behind on orders..
I did notice the plastics looked different.
In 2015 they sold 136,963 units worldwide.
Total production without holidays, stoppages & any other production problems would of maxed out at a total of 163,280 without any problems.
Into the mix you would have to add in - sales, promotional, QC, loan bikes... etc
When I was there they were 9 bikes behind there daily hourly target.

I must admit, I did find it rather odd that production would stop. But, updated plastics/ colours/ specs will be interesting to see.:thumb

I thought the spec for 2017 bikes had been fixed since September? Are we sure that Ashaplt and Rubber is not referring to 2018 bikes that will be available from September 2017?:nenau

I suppose they could just be changes for the American market?

This is how automotive handles a model change each year, they stop but watch how long for!

Yes thats right 20 minutes to change the whole Volvo line over from one years model to another, takes SMED to the next level

There have been talks of an update since earlier this year (I even started a thread in this section), but until the show next month, we'll just have to wait and see.

They stopped production when they went from TC to LC R1200 GS back in 2012-2013

Have people forgotten already that you couldn't get a new GS after October 2012 unless it was sat in dealer stock?

I doubt they would cease production for a model year upgrade though

Hi, I'm here from the Advrider forum, I stumbled upon this thread after looking through the forums for some 2017 GS update info. Here is my story regarding the new yet to be announced GS.

I went to the local dealer early in September this year (this is in the EU) to inquire about possibly purchasing a GS1200 this year. The dealer told me that they had pretty much cleared their stock for this year and advised to hold off until later in the year as they said the an updated model will be announced for the year 2017. Now, I know that some markets technically already have the 2017 year bikes shipping and riding around, but keep in mind that different countries have different systems for designating year models, i.e some countries do that by calendar year, others by product year (august to august), others by ship and first registration date and so on.

Now I went to the dealer again two weeks ago to put my order down and they already offered me the new 2017 version of the bike that they say will start to be produced in November this year for delivery early 2017. They had literally just received the new colours and options from BMW HQ. So I went on and put down a deposit and signed a contract for a R1200GS NEW (that's what it says on the options list and invoice) that they promised to deliver on February 26, 2017. The colour specs and options packages for it were these:

As you can see here - these colours have not yet been officially announced. Also the options list can tell us something about what this update will have - Hill Start Control (previously found on their luxury tourer bikes) and ABS Pro is now standard on the base model, as is Dynamic Brake Light, whatever that means.

I asked them why BMW has updated the GSA for 2017 with minor changes in colour and EU4 regulations tinkering, but not the GS and they said that most likely people are still ordering the current GS model and they have to deliver those first. They themselves seem to be confused that some GS (not GSA) models that have arrived now are EU4 compliant, which means that they have EU4 emissions, a new dash and some improved transmission internals, but this they thought was due to some legal conundrum of having some 2016-built bikes needing to adhere to EU4 standards before they end up in the market. So in theory there is a 2016-build GS model version 2. Same model, same colours - EU4 compliant and designated "2017" in some markets. Regardless, the colour specs above are from an entirely different model. How different - that is just pure speculation at this point. All I know and all they know is the new colours and package options. That is all.

Also, they said the GSA update will follow late 2017 for delivery in 2018. As historically BMW has updated the GS first with GSA following a year later (this was the case in 2013 as well). Take what you will from this, but I'm pretty confident they are announcing an updated GS in Milan. Might not be a radical update, but definitely new colours, electonics plus the engine updates that were already announced in July - updated transmission, EU4 emissions, new dash, etc.

So all this talk about the 2017 bikes having better gearboxes are all bolox since nobody has one yet so nobody can say if it's better or not! Just goes to show what the power of suggestion can do.

Lupin Blue

:jes:jes:jes

Yes, that is a bit alarming although if you search for that colour you will find some BMW RR models that have this, it's sort of a "racing blue". Don't know, don't like it, I really dug the Blue/Grey combo that they have on current bikes, too bad that's gone. Also, no more Triple Black for the regular GS :/
