Turning my BMW multi-functional wheel thing no longer has any effect.
I can still move between GPS pages by pushing left and right, but the zoom is dead. It also no longer controls the HEX ezCan, so it looks like a switch failure rather than the GPS unit/connection.
Is anything user take-apart-able or serviceable? I can live without it, but if there is something I can open and have a look, I'd like to restore it to operation. I don't know what a new switch cluster is, but I'm pretty sure rather more than I'm prepared to pay.
Cheers
Jimbo.
I'm not sure if this information is still relevant, but here is a picture of the printed board prior to LINbus. (Pre 2013)
The board is supplied with a regulated 5V from ZFE. The rolling action is sensed by means of two hall-effect sensors, and there are magnetos in the wheel. There is no physical contact between the wheel and the switches, it's all done by magnetism, and the signal that is returned to ZFE is a square pulse from each of the hall sensors. Since the sensors are offset to each other, one pulse is preceding the other one, and there by is it possible to detect direction of rotation.
The clicking action is sensed by the black rubber at the center of the PCB. There is one switch on each side of the PCB, hense front and rear click. Also, the clicking action center position is held by a magnet centering the wheel, i.e there is NO spring that will pop out.
If the rotational signal is no longer working, the problem is either a faulty hall-sensor or magnet issue in the wheel.
If I should make an educated guess, I would start to search for a broken cable. Also, one of the hall sensors may have failed, They must both work in order to sense rotation either way.
This is pre 2013 print. I have no idea if the after-2013 wheels works the same. But even if the newer ones is LINbus, it must still contain hallsensors and magnets, and it must still make square pulses. However, the signals created might be converted into serial data prior to leaving the switchgear.
The signal from the board in the picture are as follows: +5V and gnd: 2 cables. Either of the clicks: 2 cables and the last two are the signals from the two hall sensors. The 4 signalcables a

The wheel unit used to be purchased as a separate unit, and is not all that expensive. It used to also contain it's own wiring. But LINbus might have changed all that...
