Up until 12 weeks ago I had been with aol for about 12 years, because of the slow speed of the broadband in my area I decided to go with Virgin cable.
AOL say you can have access to your account even if you are not a subscriber so I was surprised to see my account had been closed after two weeks.

Scroll ahead six weeks and I get reports of some spam that had come from my old email address from friends.

I had also noted that if you emailed my old address it did not return as unfound.

While surfing yesterday my iPad pinged telling me I had email and 50 emails appeared from as recently as yesterday with another 150 to be accessed, non of them important, most junk but some of interest.

I rang AOL today and was told that the account had been deactivated and had been for some time!

Anyone any idea what might be going on?

Not sure that it is relevant in this case, but I would be careful. A few years ago now, but AOL proceeded to try and charge me for months of service after I had left them, claiming the e-mail service was being used and that entitled them to charge me.

Thanks for that, just checked and they didn't take a subscription payment out of my bank account last month and my standing order has been canceled.
