AOL

can any AOL users help: i have a mate that is on aol but is trying to work from home. and wants to set up his work email address through windows mail..
i have set up correct server names for incoming and outboing mail(copied from mine, works perfect) only change is for him is outgoing which i changed to smtp.aol.com but its like the aol is not allowing windows mail to send or recieve.. any advice greatfully received...cheers

I read this earlier while serching for answers, but its actually reverse to what Im after. I should have said the work email address is not AOL but the broadband connection hes using is. I checked the details with the email hosting company and they confirmed they were correct I then tried to check with AOL if they were blocking the email and because I was atempting to use a programme that was not AOL they would not help. Im confused :0)

A O HELL generally block port 25 for outgoing mail, so check with the work email provider to see if they offer an alternate SMTP port, then try using the work email SMTP settings with that port.

Cool, I was told years ago that I could not use Outlook if I had an AOL account, just followed the instructions above and bingo.

When I did the above I saw all my mail move to Outlook, but now when I open Outlook it's not my account and there is no mail etc. How do I set that up ?

Steve, tried the port change, aol site and other hosting sites suggest 587, its a no-go..i firmly believe its an aol problem..there are alot cheaper alternatives these days..thanks for your input people

Sorted the above problem BUT I can't send any emails but I recieve them ! Any ideas guys.

587 is the "standard" alternate port, but the works email servers may not have that configured.

We, for instance, use 49 as an alternate. You need to contact the works email techie to see of there's an alternate port set up.
