Apparently the 1250 requires different rear drive oil

Think I'd be fitting the old stuff... don't think the bevel box bits have changed?

I have a litre bottle of 75w 140 Castrol Syntrax oil in the shed and that will be what it gets. Not the overinflated price stuff from BMW. I wouldnt trust them to change the oil anyway (they wouod just say its been done) so i will do it myself.:thumb

Jeez, you spend around £16k on a bike and then quibble over 180ml's of FD oil - anyone actually priced it up?

It’s not the price at all, my bike wants for nothing. It’s the reason. As said above, it’s probably to make it just that bit better on fuel, or just that bit lower on pollution etc,

If nothing changed in there, why else go to a lesser weight?

The assumption being a lower weight oil won't do the job as well? I don't know as I've not done the accelerated life test on the units. But I know some of the decisions we make in engineering is not done in the interest of the final product. It's done to be compliant...

Edited for easy reading.

My guess is BMW know more than you and I.

They've been using the same spec in their cars for a few years now - possibly for a genuine reason, possibly not. Either way, for the £14.00 (quoted above) it costs, why worry?

I'm not saying its not better.. maybe it is and the older models would benefit from changing to it also? who know.. not me, not you

All im saying is that some changes are not always done in the interst of the actual parts and assemblies concered... ;)

Makes me wonder what is so different about the 1250 final drive vs that on the 1200 which warrants the use of 75W-80 oil compared with 90 previously, anyone in the know ?

£1000 per gallon (US), this must be the stuff. <a href="https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Red-Line-Synthetic-MTL-70W80-GL-4-Gear-Oil-1-US-Gallon-3-78L/202487723607?epid=4025381097&hash=item2f25357657:g:66sAAOSwOv1b2buu" target="_blank">Linky</a>

It’s not 75W-80 it’s 70W-80 in the 1250 manual.
Like most of us it’s not a cost issue for me and I will use up the existing oil that I have but I just wonder why BMW have changed it. ie thinner when cold and thinner when hot.
