Apparently the 1250 requires different rear drive oil

Jeez, you spend around £16k on a bike and then quibble over 180ml's of FD oil - anyone actually priced it up?

It's not about quibbling over a few quid.
It's about not falling for the BMW bullshit.
If they specified special BMW distilled water for the cooling system, that you could only get from the dealer, at £15 a bottle......would you?

It's a bevel gear.....any decent diff oil will be fine.

BTW, I've happily used Motul oil in the engine - it matches the specified grade.

Funny you mention Motul... On my 2015 bike I used it as a few here suggested it was okay and only because it was easier to get than the BMW stuff. I put it in before a trip to Ireland where we covered just short of 2K miles. Half way through the trip I noticed the gearbox was rough in 4th and knocked in 5th, something I'd not had in the 6K miles I'd done before. To the point where I did not like riding the bike as it did feel like it could let go at any point. AJ's took it in PX and shipped it out. So I for one will never use Motul again. could be coincidance who knows... ??

They messed around with the oil specifications on the Hexhead … IIRC BMW changed it about three times over a 5 year period

My 06 GSA used to get the old oil I drained out of my mower and it never had an issue in 60000 miles

I've used Motul 7100 with no issues for several oil changes. This year I’ve used Motorex because (I think) Lyndon Poskitt might have subliminally Parked the idea in my brain. If I ever get to ride it again I’ll report back.

Anyway, I also can’t see why the previous spec oil from castrol can't be used in the FD. Given the small quantity involved I’d had thought the stickier, the better.

Depends on who BMW have got a deal with.
They’ll recommend whoever gives them the biggest discount.
Unless you’re crossing the Kalahari or the Arctic, If the oil is the (approximately) the right grade and spec, it’ll be fine for normal motoring.

No it wasnt, but myself and others decided to use 75w 140 because we wanted too, no other reason.
